McMaster-Carr has those y's as well as lots of stuff we can use in model boats.

As for the sound system, if you get one that works properly, with a good speaker system and a way to let the sound out you will be quite amazed with how it enahnces your model boat. I have sound systems in three of my boats and I like them.

Hi Tom,

Hopefully when I get my module back from model sounds it will sound good. The full sized Dauntless had three storage compartments along the cockpit wall in the transom so I need to recreate the doors so that they open up. When I do this the sound will be let out because the speaker is right there.

Here are the pictures I tried to post last night. Note the (Y) connectors on the hoses. They will be hooked up to the 4 double sea scoops. Once they feed into each pump the water will blast out through a tube connected to another (Y) connector where they circulate water throughout the boat and finally out the exhaust pipes.

Also is the work done to the owners cabin as described in an earlier post.

Wow! I am impressed that you were able to stretch those silicone water jackets over an Astroflight motor!

They look great on there too.

All those water pumps and main engines running are going to make some interesting sounds of their own. I would love to hear it in person when you are running this big beautiful boat!

Hi Tom,

I'm glad that these water jackets worked out for these motors. These happen to be the largest size water jackets I could find. They are 800 sized jackets and they fit beautifully over the motors if you know anyone thatis looking for something to cover this motor. A while back I sawan old post of yours on watercooling and saw that you used these jacketson a different motor.With this said you inspired meto find these jackets as a solution for these motors.

I agree all those motors running together should sound cool. I'm planning on making and placing wood covers over the fourpumps to keep the noise levels down. This along with them being below deck should sound nice without being intrusive. Even the Astro's only have a scale rumble because that they are locked away in the engineroom.

If you are ever in the New York area I would be happy tohave you over for a run. Until then i'll be sure to continue to post pics and videos of this yacht.

Yesterday I went to a local petstore and found the (Y) water connectors in the fish tank section. I am now ready to finish up the plumbing. Once that is done all I have to do is wire it up to a servo controlled switch. The switch will have all four motors plus the engineroom fans wired to it. It will all be a pretty heavy load so it will be used sparingly to flush the heat away from the engineroom and the electronics as needed. I may just go ahead and add one more LIPO to the mix just for the cooling system. If I do this, this would bring the yachts operating capacity to 20,000 MAH.

I'm putting all this effort into the cooling system not only to cool down the electronics but also as anattempt to recreate the below pictures of the late great big 'D'...I think recreating Dauntless's unique cooling system will look cool and be notable otherwise I wouldn't bother. I am as excited as anyonefor the water jetsto converge in the exhaust chamber before it blows outthe boat. Hopefully it will look cool.

hi caps well i orderd the u joints from harbor models i hope there bullet proof for 44 bucks a pair o well i also orderd these marine 12v 30 amp escs the specs say the will work with all brushed motors not to exseed 30 amp constant draw they seem to have good reviews

While trying to find the "sweet spot" for the motor mounts to permanently glue them in place I ran into a couple of unexpected problems. The first was after 'tuning' in' the port motor I noticed a couple of cracks in the motor mount. I had also tried 'tuning' the port mount, which has "other" problems, and looking at that mount noticed similar cracks (see pics).

The other problem I ran into was the starboard mount, actually the way the starboard motor shaft/stuffing tube had been installed. Although both mounts are physically the same, in one picture you can see the forward end of the starboard mount is WAY up in the air yet the universal is still way out of alignment. Looking further aft I could see there is a decided mismatch between where the two shaft/stuffing tubes exit the hull, the port shaft/stuffing tube exits further aft than the starboard. I had previously noticed they were not parallel but the props seem to line up equally at the rudder. I'm sure one of them is pointing off a few degrees to the port. It's really kind of a mess here. I don't know if I should remove them and reinstall the shaft/stuffing tubes or leave them as they are and simply adjust the motor mounts to compensate for the misalignment? Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Bob, not really sure what to advise. The best bet would be to change shaft and that could open a whole can of worms. You probably would have to remount the strut also and a lot of filling etc.. You could just go with store bought motor mounts like Sky suggests and there are some places stateside that sell them also such as Offshore Electric. I pefer to use manufactured mounts with bigger motors If yougo that route look for ones that will accept cooling coils if you decide to add them later. Graupner mounts will not. The only question would be if the boat will perform well with the mismatch in drive angles. I don't believe mine are perfectly matched as to angle to the centerline of the keel but I don't notice any effect from that. If you go with just mounts be sure to still do away with as much offset as possible in the couplers. Those 700's at speed can cause the "ears" on the couplers to fly apart. (experience)

Hi Bob,

For the motor mounts lightly sand them and give them a heavy coat of epoxy and see if that helps. Once you have the motor mounts taken care of run the boat and see how it behaves with the stuffing tubes like that. My guess would be that the boat might run a little off balance but will barely be noticable. The only way to know for sure is run the boat first and see what happens. If the boat was very light you would probably notice the misalignment but with the boat being heavy it may be more forgiving and less obvious. This is just a guess but we will know more once you run it.

Thanks for your input.  I've looked at those mounts and wonder if there's enough room for cooling coils to go around the motor and, I agree, waiting 12+ days for delivery is no fun.  I've ordered from England before too.

I looked at the motor mounts offered by Offshore Electronics and the 'best' one has been discontinued - bummer.  The one they are using for a substitute would probably work but I sort of miss the idea of the ventilation holes the older model had, like the one from England.

I didn't sit around after this problem, well I did think about it for a while, but I went a step further than more epoxy; I put two layers of light weight fiberglass plus three coats of epoxy on the mounts then sanded the fronts smooth.  I used a sanding drum on my Dremel and evened up the back as best I could.  On the starboard mount I cut off the lip from the front then, using a 12" sanding disk mounted on my ShopSmith I sanded the bottom of the mount to make the front thinner than the back by roughly one half.  I'll add some pictures later

Here are the pics of the "re-conditioned" motor mounts. I have not discounted buying aluminum mounts but I want to see how these will work out. I believe the prloblem was the "O-ring" I tried to put in front of the motor, it caused uneven stresses and thus the cracks. It sounded like a good idea but didn't play out in practice. Four mounting screws would have probably eliminated most of the stresses BUT these motors don't have four mounting screws! So no more O-rings.

So here's the pics including where I also took off the 'lip' from the front of the starboard mount and slimmed down the thickness of the base.

Almost forgot, I started with a pic of the starboard mount showing the extreme bend in the universal plus you can see the back of the mount is up in the air quite a bit so one thing I decided to do was cut that lip off, as I said earlier.

P.S. The drive shafts you see in one of the pictures are the 'old' shafts, still laying on the side of the workbench, shame on me.

i just looked at 60 pix of you captains boats and what i dont see is the antana im geting ready to install my recever where are you captains puting it ? under the deck i was thinking of running it up the radar mast or puting it up as a vaf on the side like big d what do you think

Currently I run it through the owners cabin hatch and then loop it through a hole that is drilled on the back of the mast platform. This spot will eventually be where the light pole will go. At some point I am going to drill a hole on the deck and have a plastic straw come through the deck. This is where I will feed the antenna wire and then it will clip onto the light pole.
