It was really kind of funny at the time when they required small pleasure craft to seal heads since many cities were dumping sewage into the water and were the larger problem and continued to be for a long time.I remember NYC had to install dumping facilities for the Staten Island ferries which then recieved minimal treatment and then were dumped back into the harbor! At the time I had an 18' outboard cruiser with a head and no room for a holding tank and had to seal or remove it by law or face a large fine. Course they had those "hot seats" that burned the waste. OUCH!!

Rich,

Can you put "false" bilge release ports on the side(s) of the hull and vent the bilge pump(s) out the transom, well above the water line, even when reversing?

Hi bob & captains..

I did a little reading on the subject and found a solution. It doesn't matter which side of the hull the discharge outlet is on but it should be placed in relation to the bilge. In my case it would be located in a different place from her big sister because my bilge is placed forward in the engine room. So now it becomes, port or starboard? It wasn't clear or may not matter which side it should be placed.

Here is where it gets interesting...Discharge outlets are usually placed at the waterline and to prevent reverse siphoning riser loops are set in place to keep that from happening. The thing is that if the discharge outlet is underwater then reverse siphoning can still happen. The best solution is to place the discharge outlet a little higher than the waterline. The reason why they are not placed high is so that the water doesn't splash on the hull. The lower it is placed the neater the discharge will be,

So following this advice I will set up the outlet slightly higher than the waterline and will use a riser loop is a given being that the tube goes straight up from the bilge before descending downward to the discharge outlet..

Also, for a boat 65' long it is said that they should have about 4 pumps installed in different locations. I'm plotting 2 more pumps because the forecastle floor is sealed tight I don't need one there..

This video shows the water characteristics of my boat.

At the 11 second mark of the video she is up on plane. I noticed that if I was to place the discharge outlet on her bootstripe in the front of the engine room the line is lifted out of the water up on plane. There is water blowing around there but it is likely deflection from the spray rail. Most of the water action will be just behind where I want to place it.

At the 36-38 second mark still shows the white bootstripe above water as she passed slowly. I will place it just above the waterline because I plan on adding more weight as the interior and other details go in. This will give me a little bit of safety in the event that the waterline has to be moved up later on.

Looky here captains,

I found a discharge outlet on the port side coming from the engine room. This seems to be at the water line. I'm getting a little loose with some of my top secret pics..

Hey Rich great pic! Check and see, I think those ports can be seen on both sides of the boat in its final days. The big square mounting flanges surrounding the exit holes look like creative afterthoughts in my opinion...

It could also be a "band aid" fix for a miscut hole as it's possible the discharge was put there to dump engine cooling water after the engine change. My though being the starboard side was similarly "patched" with planking as seen in an earlier picture posted in this thread

Deep,

I was looking over your pics of the wiring and noticed something was missing - fuses!  Maybe you just haven't gotten around to installing them yet but if you want you can read the following for some really good and interesting information on the subject.  http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...wiring+diagram

Hi captains,

I don't know where to start...This day was an extraordinary sailing experience and it was special thanks to both Bill and Gary for helping me make this a successful mission.

I want to stress that this was a very dangerous mission for an RC boat. It wouldn't take much to lose the boat. Later on the current picked up and sailing would have been a nightmare so it was very important to get the tides right. Because I sailed at dead high tide the current stopped and made this a doable misshion. An hour later it was getting very risky especially with so much debris chruning up in the river. So anyone that reads this in the future, know exactly how the tides work before attempting this!

There will be multiple posts in the next few days going into detail over many facets of the day. Also there will be seperate updates on much of the work done that prepared Dauntless for this mission. Also I will do a seperate commentary on a great craftsman named Gary and his Dauntless.

The start of the morning was foggy and brisk. We settled off to the right of Tarrytown harbor where my Dauntless and another one was brought in for a detailed show & tell. Once we determined the launch plan I set up champagne for Dauntless and sparkling cider for us. Then, a formal christening was held while she sat in her cradle and after I asked spoke words and asked the gods of the sea to watch over Dauntless champagne was poured over her bow facing north, her stern, her starboard and port sides. Then we toasted with some sparkling apple cider and began the launch. We had the apple cider because we were in a public spot and it was better to be on the safe side..Dauntless however got the good stuff all to herself..

Then, the Dauntless set sail in the Hudson River and headed south where she sailed in Tarrytown harbor which is where the Dauntless sailed countless times. We sailed the Dauntless very far out at times so that we could get the best shots possible of the area. One glitch we had was the batteries in the video camera were weak and it shut down just after a few minutes out to sea. Fortunately I did get a full view of the sailing area before it shut down. The video didn't cover the yacht club docks but she is photographed in there. I have many pictures and still have to go through them so I can pick & choose a 'best of' set for posting. This will be in the next day or two.

Below is the video:

Thanks guys!

Here we go for pictures..I am going to post as many as possible but i'll still have more..

We went out for two runs today. First was the historical site at Tarrytown Harbor and afterwards we went back to our cars where I charged up the LIPOS before heading off to another site for more sailing..

The next few posts will contain the pictures in Tarrytown.

Continuing on..

These photos are of Dauntless entering Tarryown harbor. This is where Dauntless would have sailed to enter and exit the marina complex. Also, in these shots there is a huge rusted barge that has taken on water. I wonder if that barge was around when Dauntless was there. It looks like it may have been an old gas dock but perhaps Bill will chime in and offer possible explanations.

Also, the boat was sailed far out in many of these pictures. I generally don't mind pushing the envelope but I got nervous a few times on how far she was going. The F-14 transmitter has excellent range and the fact that the antenna wire was the highest point of the boat ensured we could maximize the distance. We always seemed to have plenty of range though.

And more with the Tapanzee bridge...

The bridge was too close so even at my best efforts I couldn't get scale shots. Later on we moved to a different location to try to get pics so the bridge looked smaller but more on that later. In these pics we have captain Billl at the helm while i'm shooting photos..

It was a great time but I really think Rich became Laurence for a while there. When he gave me the helm he kept calling me Tommy for some reason.
