the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless

Hi Steve,
Texas is huge, we didn't get any snow..I did hear however that the city is useless when a snowflake hits the ground. I actually am one of the few people that find joy driving in snow storms. .there was a few cold days over though..I am eyeing on Friday as a sailing day for the Dauntless. You have a beautiful view over there!!
Here are a few pics of my Dauntless.
I adjusted the motor couplers, rigged up the water cooling system, changed the steering system, and even re-rigged the guy wires on the radar mast. She is ready for a run in Texas.
I can't wait to see how she performs with the LIPO's relocated in the engine room. I think she will perform more efficiently at high speeds.

Hi all,
I have been mostly updating the other Dauntless forum. Here is my update: The Dauntless was readied for the water and she did 2 runs in Texas. As part of the run I wanted to test the water cooling. I am having issues with it which is causing me to rethink it.
Next, the first run one of my motor couplers exploded but I was still able to cruise on one motor. I replaced the broken coupler (because it is a plastic insert) and sailed her today. The new coupler blew out and again she was able to cruise back to shore on her other motor. I am going to order new couplers and try to realign the motor mount.
Here is a photo from today's run.

Hello to all, I've been reading up on the thread now for about the last two months. And I've taken the plunge, so I'm introducing myself to the group. And to let everyone know that I'm the one that has bought/taken over RTHALLS boat. So this week, the Dauntless will make the voyage from Indiana, to Maryland. I'm hoping that FedEx will be carefull with her. I'll post pictures here soon, and let everyone know how she performs hopefully this weekend on the millpond near my parents house in Delaware.

HI Geo..
My build started before online build logs ever existed so the very beginning of my boat lies in a still unpublished photo album. My rebuild started here on page 4 or page 6. All the action on my re-build is here.
Next year I will be done with professional studies and am going to come back here and finish the original vision for my boat.
I started the RCGroups site because my research spanned around 100 pages so I took most of that information and brought it there in a few pages. I use the RCGroups forum as a discussion rather than a build log like I did here. When I resume building details I will come back here for detailed building and then post the installed parts there.

DF- Thanks for light info!
Rich- See page 186 post 4627. That sleeve will align your motor to shaft. I can fit ends of universal to whatever you need. LMK
No real update on windshield, Thought I ordered 1/2 oz fiberglass, been waiting for it. turns out I didn't order correctly and didn't submit. Crickey. I think I have a Grand Plan for windshield and other glass installations. An "L" shape routed in 1/8 basswood strips so glass will be recessed on interior side as well as outside. We'll see. If it works I'll share it with all of you. If it doesn't, lets forget I mentioned it. However, I did have success with making neato vents out of dollhouse shutters.

Hey Steve,
I'm not sure if you have any questions on the bridge cockpit but I know what it looked like before the shelter. Unfortunately I don't have many pictures of it laying around. The shelter was built around the windshield. Look at the double paned windshield on the Dauntless. The bottom portion was there before the shelter. When the shelter was added the second portion was added above it which was made to swing out and then the corner windows were added.. Look at the photo of the Dauntless with Princess Beatrix waving for some guidance. There were 3 windows and they went a little more than half way up as far as height goes.
Unfortunately the best pics of the Dauntless without her top are in Tarrytown..
Hey Bill, Would you be up for a Tarrytown mission one of these days? It is truly worth it AND you can likely score some great pictures there.

Hey Rich-
I printed the pic you mentioned and have it in front of me. I do see the double windshield right behind the uprighted tennis racket. I also see the rear bridge canopy with uprights and supports with a single center beam lengthwise.Interesting. Do you think the bridge hard top was buckled on like my Austin Healey? That would give the option to have entire bridge open with just the windshield up in front. The radar was also upgraded by the time this pic was taken. I see much more with enlarged print. Thanks for the heads up.

Below is a picture that shows a brace one each side that anchors at the helm. The brace was always there but elongated when the top was added. Technically the brace might not have been needed but kept because it was existing support.
The below shows 2 braces. The original windshield had 4 braces. There was one at each support and the two end supports anchor at the deck. I am looking at them now. I am looking at the original photo with the top off and the owner at the helm. It is as clear as day, the photo online is much more grainy. Please refer to that photo.
Special note: The windshield was only as wide as the 3 windows as seen on the Dumas Model, where the corner windows start, (the wraparound on mine) there was no windows there so just focus on the center and one on each side, and brace them. Simple, done.
I hope this helps.

Hey Steve,
Here is something for you, the windshield in detail. Note that the windshield had a thin stainless or chrome frame around it. Also revealed are some items to give you a glimpse on how the Dauntless originally looked.
I took a few pics and these two came out the best. Hopefully this will help you.
Enjoy!

Interesting fact...The Dauntless's owner wasn't even 40 years old when he took delivery of the Dauntless. Note he doesn't even have gray hair in the above photo.
Also see that he is standing much higher than the guy next to him..he was standing on a platform at the helm so he can see from a higher point. Notice the fold away step above at the helm in post 4815 and notice above the fabric at the ceiling of the shelter..The fabric moved away and gave the captain the same viewing perspective even with the shelter in place.
(Yes, I will eventually modify my shelter)
Enjoy!

Koka check out what the weight from the latest ice storm is doing to boats in covered wet slips here. Ouch! (credit WFAA, CBS 11 News).

Wow Rich-
I would expect the property owners to be prepared for something like this. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The insurance Co. is gonna be mighty ticked off over this. Surely this isn't the 1st time for an ice storm of this magnitude. I'm glad my restored vintage Chris Craft yacht isn't under there. (If I had one). Humans never cease to amaze me.

There was also a pickup truck that almost crashed into my Enclave...After telling the guy off I sprayed it around my car to clear the ice and hopefully keep the A-holes from slamming into my car.

Sea trails in Millsboro, DE
Well today was sea trails in Millsboro, DE. It was interesting to say the least my boys broke my transmitter antenna while I was at work. So I kept it close to shore, one thing I did notice is that I have to mess with the trim on the rudders. She wasn't as responsive to the starboard as she was to port. Being she has two SLA batteries in her I'm going to have to work on placement due to the fact that she sits lower in the stern that most of the other boats I've seen on here. So those at the two things I need to address first. The battery location and buying a new transmitter antenna. After that I should be good, for a while till I start wanting to change things here and there.
