To anyone that is planning to do an interior for your Dauntless, here is a reality that has me doing some re work. When i built my Dauntless, i remember bieng so careful to make sure that the forward port windows were aligned on both sides, and therefore it came out really nice when i epoxied the fittings and carved out the windows.

About a month ago, i went though all the trouble of removing the interior paint and prepping the FWD cabin insides for eventual staining. Now that the fwd cabin interior walls are in their correct place (Following S&S Blueprints) i realize that the windows are completely off, and last night i spent the night removing the metal fittings from the windows. (destroying 7 out of 8 fittings in the removal process) Also, after sanding and prepping, i had to fill the all ports on the portside with epoxy. When i go home tonight, i will have to sand them and refill.

I guess it is somewhat of a blessing because i will have all ports in their correct place and they will be square not oval, but i will have to re paint the inside part and not stain as intended.

Moral of this set back is: If anyone is building Dauntless and are sure that you will be adding a full interior, hold off on cutting ports until you get to that point. (Possibly just paint them as Dumas suggested if you feel that you really want them for the time bieng). If anyone built Dauntless and cut out the ports, and will eventually plan on an interior build, it is probable that you will have to re work the ports. Now that i continue to to observe a picture of Dauntless (That i always keep around me) it does make sense on the window placement in the picture. I am also willing to bet that when they built the Yacht, they cut out the windows from the inside to keep aligned with the interior.

Once i rework this, i will post pics on this site.

That is an article i stumbled upon, which is not easy to re-locate. The article was about some guys from Kodak onboard Dauntless with LSR, taking experimental pictures for Kodak that would pave the way for color film.

Isn't it funny how huge the equipment is.

Here is an article that i found that is linked to Dauntless.

One by one, heads of all the majors trouped out to Oyster Bay to see "Waller's Wonder." The 15 minute film included the roller coaster at Rockaway Playland and the Long Island Choral Society singing the Messiah, which had been recorded in the church, then photographed to playback on a set constructed at the tennis court. Both were in black and white. There were also traveling shots of fall foliage and scenes aboard the Rockefeller yacht, which marked the first use of the new Kodak monopack color negative film.

I wonder if there is a way to find this "Waller's Wonder" to see the scenes aboard the Rockefeller yacht.

On another note, recently, i sent Bill an email for some clarification on the floor height for the Bridgedeck and hatches and here is his response:

to you. The Dauntless is currently on the south shore of St.Croix and I

not seen it for around two years. I will be off island for a couple of
weeks, but when I return I will see if I can find were they are
restoring
her and take some picture for you all. Here is a few answers I can
currently
offer.

when entering Dauntless using the gate going onto the Bridge deck, were
there any steps leading down? (A) No, I believe this was nearly
level

how high would you say the side walls of the bridge deck would be? 2-3?

I believe they around 3'

S&S showed hatches leading into the main cabin and the aft cabin, were
they
sliding hatches? (A) Definitely Sliders (Mahogany)

I will try and find her when I get back, in the next few weeks, get
permission, document, measure, and photograph as many details as
possible
for you guys and send a more accurate sketch in a PDF format.

Now that i got the info from Bill, i am going to re-set the Bridgedeck floor and get that ready for planking as well. This reset will also significantly raise the height of the engine room. (Good news for my electronics)

Great work as usual Rich. Thanks for documenting your work for all of the Dauntless fans. Sure makes it tempting to start on the interior detail of my model.

That would be so cool if Bill can get detailed pics of the real thing. I'd be very interested to see how the restoration is going too. Glad to hear she's not going to rot away on the beach like I once thought.

Does anyone know where I might get a CHEAP pair of these (attached pic) that couple a 5mm motor shaft to a 3/16" drive shaft? With this I could quickly drop in two Speed 700 motors in my Dauntless.

Found them at MHZ's website for $60/pair[X(]. At that price, I may just hire a couple of hungry squirrels to turn the props instead!

It is never too late to start on the interior for Dauntless. I am working on this interior YEARS after i built it. I would rather do this than to start another boat. I also find it as or more rewarding than laying another keel. Building the interior is taking this kit to new heights.. . The scale and size of this boat is the perfect candidate for an interior. In my opinion, if you have the will to build this boat, then why not go forth with the interior, even if it is at a later time after you enjoyed it for a while. I have been taking pics of this boat since i laid keel, (most are photos) now that i am doing the interior, (Digital pics) i have lots of pics documenting along the way, i can continue to share this boat in it's various stages with anyone that may have questions or are stumped in a certain stage. The fun part is that i am continuing to learn something new as i go along with this as well.

Bill is going to see if he can provide us with some pics of the actual Dauntless in the next few weeks. When i hear something from him, i will share them with you.

While browsing through harbormodels.com, i found a Karden style motor coupler.

Kardan Style Motor Couplers
Heavy duty brass ends are locked down to the shaft with a grub screw using the allen wrench supplied. The heavy duty universal joint slides over the brass ends and is held in place by the veins on the brass and grooves in the plastic.

Use the two drop down menus to select the two end sizes for your coupler. Once you have selected both sizes click "Order" and that size coupler will be added to your shopping cart.

Completing her commemorative visit to the Hudson Valley (TIME, Sept. 21), The Netherlands' pretty Princess Beatrix became an honorary citizen of Brooklyn,â€* moved on upriver to visit West Point and Vassar College, stayed a night at Hyde Park as the guest of Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt. There, she boarded Laurance Rockefeller's yacht Dauntless for a cruise to Albany, led what was locally reported as "the greatest parade in upstate history" celebrating her arrival, and spent the weekend with Governor and Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller. Among the week's souvenirs: ten boxes of apples, a jar of sweet corn, and (from the U.S. Military Academy) a cadet captain, 6 ft. tall, in full-dress uniform with silver saber. Sadly, the cadet captain was made of wax.
