RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
I haven't got mine out in a while. I have no excuse. She's become quite the shelf queen. Still have those new motors to install.
Meanwhile I've been trying see if I might have a use for a pair of pumps (NOT as in women's high heels ) that I have lying around. When you run them at 6 volts (half the rated voltage), the big belt-driven gear spins slow, with a sound and vibration like little engines at idol. Might be a cool effect in the Dauntless when she's just floating stationary? They spit out a decent stream of water, but not the blast that Rich is probably looking for. Since they are peristaltic, they can run dry and are self priming, the pressure (not volume) is impressive too.
Sorry I'm babbling again.

Dauntlessfan,
That is a cool gizmo you have there... I'm sure there is a creative way to get it to work in Dauntless.. Hmmm, do i see working plumbing in your Dauntless's future![sm=idea.gif]
There is no such thing as babbling here![sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

As I look through my parts bin, I've got a couple 'strings' of tiny red/green blinking LED christmas lights made for those little Christmas dioramas. Might be fun to run from bow, to top of radar mast, to stern and float around at the park at dusk...
BTW I had to change my user name if I've managed to totally confuse anyone.

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Need advice on powering my Dauntless. I am using Mack hardware with 2.2" 3 blade props. I don't know if I should go with the Mack 4 motor set-up at 2:1 reduction or the Mack 2 motor set-up at 2 or 3:1 reduction. The Dauntless was a fast boat for her size, any advice?

Dauntlessfan,
Caught onto the name change, very cool by the way![sm=thumbs_up.gif]
It would be awesome to see the Christmas lights set up on your Dauntless from Bow, Mast to stern. It would be a very classy addition for the holiday season.
Just make sure you post pics!!! [sm=teeth_smile.gif]

LClark,
Dauntless was fast for her size and the model should reflect some of that. I am not sure what your speed requirements are, but i noticed on the large fast scale models like Dauntless & Donzi Z65, many folks have been successful on running them on direct drive.

Dear Dauntless Captains:
Here is what i have done this week:
The entire inside hull below the water line has been given a coat of epoxy to protect the wood from water and to add strength to the hull.
A new bulkhead was built and installed between the main cabin and the forward cabin. It is also water tight.
The forward cabin floor has been given 3 coats of polyurathane and still needs more. I also trimmed it for eventual permanent installation. (The floor will be sealed in place with epoxy and will create a watertight chamber below the floor in the empty space.)
I started making adjustments to the forward cabin walls for permanent installation. They cannot be completed totally until i build the ceilings which should start soon.
I made the forward cabin windows and vents, cut out windows and fitted. Tonight, i am going to take the opportunity to fit 1/8" wood strips under the cover where it rests on the hull, starting forward going back to main cabin, epoxy the strips in place, so that i can build out a sill (like on real yachts) for asthetics and to keep water from leaking into the interior. (for the model)
Once the strips are in place, the windows and vents will be mounted in place flush with the exterior and the vents will have a very thin frame epoxied around the perimeter.
The hatch over the forward cabin has been sealed so that it can be relocated slightly aft.
I purchased the paint for the yacht and special ordered the blue so i am waiting for it to arrive.

Dear Dauntless Captains:
The cabin supports/windows/vents are in as planned. Tonight, i have to continue to sand and fill.
Also, i stumbled on another tid-bit with Dauntless mentioned.
Mr. Rockefeller revealed an unusual mix of ingenuousness and perhaps chutzpah when he wrote an article for the Readers Digest in 1976 titled, "The Case for a Simpler Life." The author, who owned paintings by Bonnard and Gainsborough, many large houses, his own plane, a Bentley among other cars, and a 65-foot speed boat cited his family's view that waste was always sinful.
(The Author was Laurance, but i left out the unrelated details.)
The 65 foot speedboat would be Dauntless, being she came in at 65'10". I found it Intersting that she was referred to as a speed boat...

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
I just want to thank everyone who has posted pictures and information on the Dauntless.
I recently ran across this thread and am now inspired to get back to work on the Dauntless that I started over 20 years ago. Getting married and having a child put a stop to the build. Now that my daughter is off to college and we are empty nester's I can dedicate some time to getting it running. All of the pictures will definitely help me fill in the blanks in the Dumas instructions
Thanks for all of your research and time to post the information about the yacht.

Dauntless Captains,
Here are a few things i have been working on:
**The windows & vents in the forward cabin have been installed, epoxied and sanded.
**The forward crew hatch has been relocated.
**The beams to the forward cabin ceiling have been cut and the light frames are built. Tonight, i will begin gluing the frames.

This boat is in desperate need of primer, but the temp dropped bigtime in NY and not sure when i will be able to do touch-ups.

Thank you Marty!
Last night i centered and glued the frame together. Tonight, i am going to measure and cut the hatch going into the forward cabin and then set up beams to go around the hatch opening.
Over the weekend, i am going to do the same for the main cabin.
Once both frames are built, i will have a planking party!
Anyone wanna come.. lol.

Dauntless Captains,
Last night, i removed the tape from the frames. The frame is now removable.
Also added wood strips to the top of the fwd cabin bulkhead, sanded and trim them to fit the cover snug. See pic.
The hatch was also cut going into the forward cabin, but before i knew it, it was midnight and did not get to add beams and cut the ceiling beam over the hatch as planned.

Hi Rich;
You are doing a fine job! You will have invested as much time in your "Dauntless" as the S&S group put into the original craft.
Warm building,
Chuck

Thank you Chuck.
The amount of time and thought that has gone into this build has been an overwealming process. I started this "overhaul" 1 year ago and thought that i would have been finished by now. It seems that i will do this for another year to get it the way i want it. I really enjoy working on this and watching it take shape and all, but everything takes so long and nothing on this build happens as quickly as i would like it to..I need the S&S group to jump in and speed things up....so i can finally slip her into water..where she belongs.
How is your build coming along? What have you been doing with Dauntless these days? pls share.
regards.
