PT 109
I'm looking for a first boat kit, I've been building rc airplanes for almost 20 years but am interested in taking a boat with me to the pond or river when I fly off of floats. Can anyone recommend a good PT 109 type boat or simliar Navy ship that would be good for a first timer. Anyhelp would be appreciated...

I am currently building the Dumas 33" PT 109. I have pics of the build in a post on this site. Its my first build. Like it so far. Its not hard if you do like the experienced guys on here say, go slow and read everything twice.

Not knowing your skill level, I would say start with something simpler. I have built a couple of Franks semi kits and although not hard, they simply do not go together with a shake of the box. However, Robbe makes a very nice German PT boat that has a plastic hull and looks pretty cool. This would be much simpler for someone to start with. As for the Dumas kits, most of the ones I have built the wood is marginal at best. Most likely, you would do some sanding & trial and error fitting of the wood. If this sounds like its for you then great, if not then look elsewhere. Also, the 48" Dumas hull profile is inaccurate. It slopes down towards the bow whereas the real Elcos did not.

I would take a look at the new Italeri 28 " plastic PT kit for a nice highly detailed plastic kit that can be radio controlled

Right now, I think Hobbyland in Mishawaka, Indiana has the best price on the new Italeri PT boat. 1/35th scale.

As a first timer, I would say this kit is absolutely the best way to go. I already have my kit and it is the best rendition of a PT boat ever. The entire deck removes in order to reach the internal installations.

steve, went to that site but couldn't find that PT model? I think that Pt boat sells for like $400 doesn't it, thats a lot of cash for a plastic ship. What is its lenght and width?

Are there any PE sets out there for this model yet? I am still holding off buying one so far. They would make a good conversion kit. Also the Dare kits by Pat Tritle are good beginner kits. They sell for about $60. They are wood laser cut kits that would need the hull sealed.

I thought I had read somehwere that John Snyder at White Ensign was working on extra PE sets. I can't seem to find that information again. I didn't know if that was real or if they had been released yet.

If you want an easy kit to convert to RC look for the Lindberg 1:32 PT 109 kit on E-bay. I have built three of these kits. The kit is out of production but they do show up on E-Bay for about $60 - $70. Its not as detailed or as accurate as the Italeri kit but it has the running gear you need for the RC conversion. Lindberg also produced an RC conversion power drive kit that goes for about $120.00 that has the motor control two electric motors with mounting brackets and instructions for installing the radio equipment. Once done these boats are very fast and a blast to operate. The attached photos are of the first one I built 20 years ago. I still run it when there’s no ice on the lakes here in Wisconsin. I am currently building the new Italeri kit and will be installing the Lindbergh drive system in it. Should be done by mid may.
