5,000 rpm geared down 3:1
I am building a Dumas Shelly Foss tug boat, Dumas has plans for (2) 2" dia. 2" pitch, 3 blade props powered by 2 5,000 RPM motors geared down 3:1. This only gives me 1,667 RPMS if there is no power loss, and does not seem practial. Could I get some feed back, Thanks, Randy.

If you have motors that run that slow, don't bother with the gears... but they may not be very powerful either. Go with faster motors if you must have the gear reduction.

HANS, I have a Shelly Foss I built up 5 years ago. It uses 2 Johnson 970 motors at 12volts turning 5000rpm with direct drive. motor shafts are 1/4'', drive shafts are 3/16 dia. turning 3" Rivabo props. Battery is a 12volt 17amp hr. Scale speed it will run about 45 minutes. The battery sits ahead of the motors in the middle of the boat. It takes alot of weight to bring it down to the waterline. Might as well do it with a battery first, then fine tune the look you want with lead shot and wax.

The gear reduction seems to be relative to the size of prop your turning in tugs, make sureto balance those props! It will take a while but I'm turning two inch props in my destroyer escort and it took be about a month for both(couple of hours a day. BK sends
