2.4 Ghz and boats
Has anyone been using Spektrum and/or any other 2.4 Ghz system with boats? I've received feedback from Horizon Hobby that advises against this due to reflectivity of the higher frequency off of the water's surface. I'm trying to condense my models into just one or two of my transmitters and hope to go all 2.4 Ghz.

RE: 2.4 Ghz and boats
Most the people in my club have switched to Spektrum and Futaba and Airtronics 2.4Ghz systems and there are zero glitch problems. This same subject came up over at RCG and it was agreed that the tech at Horizon who has given this "opinion" is lacking in proper knowledge of how the 2.4Ghz frequency actually works and is totally ignorant of what has been going on in the real model boating world for the past two years.
Submarines, can't use 2.4Ghz.

RE: 2.4 Ghz and boats
I have a 'Spektrum' DX6 that hasn't caused any problems with my boats. I've heard that the Futaba 2.4 Ghz system works fine with boats. In general, any 2.4 Ghz system ought to work fine -over- water, not well at all -through- water (sub guys are out'a luck). I haven't had any first hand experience with Futaba's 2.4 Ghz radios so can't make a comparison with 'Spektrum's. Which brand you decide on is more or less a 'personal' thing, you know? As for the "Xtreme Power Systems 2.4 Ghz", sorry, never heard of it. Having a radio system that can be used for both surface and air would seem to be a 'plus' to me. So does not having to worry about having a pocket full of crystals. Maybe because I'm cheap and lazy?

There was some talk that rooster tail between Tx and Rx can cause problems... but I've been using a DX6 since it first hit the street, no problem in my scale boats.

For $189.00 for just the module I would go with the 'Spektrum' DX6i. Shop around $165 - $179.

However- if the left stick is configured for aircraft then how do you reverse the boat?
Edit tried it- it seems to work ok- with cruise control! Range is good what worries me is there is a time lapse from when it loses the signal to when control kicks back in for me- in the meantime the motor idles slowly forward so I have to be careful lest it collide with something.

If it flies or floats I use 2.4 with no problems at all. I heard that you shouldn't use 2.4 in a submarine, that will have signal problems when submerged.
