Hi guys,
I ussualy spend my time crawling about the ground with my tanks but ive decided to get my feet wet, Im looking at building a roughly 1/45th scale CSS Arkansas Ironclad, She will be 44in long 9.5 in wide and have a draft of only 3in, My main question is in regard to motors, Im looking at using the same kind of motors we use in our tanks(360 or 380) & come with a gear set to provide more tourque for the tracks, How well would this work for turning a prop in the water? if these would work that would be great seeing as im hoping on using the airsoft gun and smoke maker from a tank in the ship and the less wiring i have to do the better.. I also would like the ship to move at a scale speed and the original ships top speed was only 8mph.. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I was considering doing the same with my 1/72 Canonicus class monitor but didn't have the needed space below deck & went with a hacked servo. Combined with the monitor style 4 bladed prop shown in [link=http://walternelson.com/ironclads.pdf]Modeling Civil War Ironclad Ships[/link], you shouldn't have any problem making headway with the Heng Long gearbox setup.

How do you plan to build the hull & casement? I'm looking forward to seeing your thread progress!

Hey chuck,
Thanks again for the information and help, so far im thinking of building the casemate and hull out of styrene but im not 100% sure , seeing as ill be starting the build while im up at college styrene is easier for me to use with a limited # of tools, and like we had talked before im going to model the Arkansas with the verticle sides and hopefully arm her with a few airsoft cannons to control the ponds
BTW do you have any pics of you ironclads?

Scale speed in water will be about 1.5 mph. A pair of 15 volt 385s on 6 volts with direct drive will do nicely. Much easier than messing with gearboxes.

Here in the UK about 4 or 5 quid. My local hobby shop is a 20 minute walk away.
They are a very common motor and widely available, but many hobby shops are into "fast", "exciting", and "easily breakable so we can sell you spares" and thus only understand motors with hot windings that you dont want.
A 385 is 38mm long and has 5 poles, there are 400 series motors that can be regarded as a direct drop-in replacement. Look for 5 poles and run on about half the rated voltage.

She was built in 32'nd scale and comes in at 60" long. Plank on frame construction with epoxy/glass over wood. There are plans in the future for a black powder cannon. Here are a few more pictures.

5000 [:-] i would have lost my mind, that is deffinitly one of the finest ships i have ever seen... i know mine will not come out that good up close im going more for the stand off scale otherwise id lose my mind... hopefully my arkansas will come out looking that nice in the water 5ft away

Thanks for the compliment, I'm sure yours will come out good. I was starting to loose my mind trying to find the rivets until I came across a gal who was able to order them for me in bulk. The motors, belts and pulleys were all salvaged from copy machines. Since the motors were 24 volt, I re-wound them for 12 volts. Some may think I'm insane but they were 7 pole ball bearing motors.

a copy machine..well the confederates salvaged what they could to power their ironclads... how well do they power her? have you had any problems with reliability issues? hopefully they run better than the Arkansas motors..

Even reduced down 2.5:1 it has enough power to swamp the fore deck. I don't run it that fast but with it being about 50 pounds, I'd rather have the extra power available for emergency manuvers. During our regattas some people have a hard time seeing an all black boat so low in the water. The main deck only sits about 5/8" above the water line.

Love the USS CARIO circa 1861. It is on display & I e-mailed them for some data about her.

Happy wood butcher for a month or 2. Steam paddlewheeler. She is a massive beast. Will look good next to the Higgins PTB WW II.

The Vicksburg park is high on my to do list this summer...im hopping on taking a week or so off and heading down there and to my birth place in Biloxi MS..and hopefully catch a reenactment or two i can get involved in seeing as i portray a Confederate sharpshooter of the 15th Mississippi Sharpshooter batallion and am limited on what i can go to up here in MN, not that many civil war reenactments around... Heres a few pics of me that were taking by my soon to be fiancee... Ive added on to my uniform since the pics were takin but the only thing not period correct are my shoes... no one makes civil war brogans in my shoe size which is a size 17(yep thats not a typo 17) but i managed to find a pair of mens dress shoes that are similar to design and have since darkened them some more for a meare $14 dollars...needless to say $14 dollars is better than a arm and a leg for a pair of shoes custom made..expecialy as a college student

I give away 60 pre made and painted model boats. The kids assemble and Magic Marker them as they like. With rubber motors underneath that we wind up with cordless drills.

Life is good.

Eventually on my to do list of boats is the USS Cairo. There is something about that City class of boats that I like. I've been down to Mound City, Illinois where they were built.
