HAPPY double Birthdays!!  I love key West it's nuts but so relaxing.  I almost went a few weeks ago when I canceled my NY trip due to Irene.  Enjoy your time with the family..  Don't come back with anymore Ideas for builds while you are down there..   You know  floating Buick's or anything like that.

Soo draging for shrimp in the South and draging for bottom fish up North are much the same except for the mesh size. They keep making it larger up here

redmichaelgriffin 09-09-2011 09:13 PM

RE: Scratch Built Shrimp Boat.

They dont have any mesh size law yet but believe me they have all kinda stuff we have to add to our nets to please the gov. t.e.d.s. being the most costly we do Every state does have a net size like ms is you cant have larger than 5o ft of net span whether it be two 25s or one 50 not even worth my time messing with that small stuff Iusuall pull 110 to 220 ft of net span depends on my depth

Take along a video camera and make some small youtube videos of life aboard a shrimper.

Managed to start rigging the boat. Here are a few pictures.

And one video that I just made testing the booms.

That is looking sooo neat.  A good idea using different colored cables for the 'stays' (have to call them by the right name Michael ;), now that we know it).  Have you put the lead weight into the outrigger ends yet to help with lowering?  Might help with that little hitch you have that showed up in the video.

The video with the net on look "cool", if I can use the term.  Still working on the doors?  While I'm thiking of it, how about a picture of the bow where you have the stay lines anchored?  Would like to see how you did it.  I was thinking of  a simple eye screw but you may have done it differently.

Thanks Bob,
I'm Pretty exicited about this one.
The cables that mount to the bow are just held there with a small screw eye and a fishing swivel.
The little hitch you see as the left boom is going down is where I cut a notch in the top of the pulley to attach the cords. I'll clean that up or replace the wheel which I just happen to have an extra.
No lead in the booms as of yet. I'll wait till the doors are built and hung on.
I really have not had a chance to build the net doors yet, I just threw the nets on to see how it looks. I'm going to the store and see if I can find a green net material.

This video was just for fun.:)

Nice video. The doors will make a difference. Are you going to make it so the nets will go into the water? or just hang on ther with the doors ready to go?

I was watching closely and saw the prop drop off near the end of the video, surprised I didn't hear a mild expletive. [X(]

You and the wife have a really nice, relaxing time down in the Keys. :D Which number is this one?

Bob

I think I'm just going to let them hang ready to drop them in the water. A lot easier that way.
When the prop came off..............I bit my tongue.:(
This will make the third boat and my third trip to the keys...........WOW.;)
BTW.........I forgot Ihave a set of LED lights that I bought from Radical RC to use on my foam aircraft for flying at night. I plan to put them to good use. One red, one green, one white and one red blinker.
Getting close to finishing it.
I'll also buy some blue loctite for the prop. I have the red loctite but afraid I'll never get it off if need be without heat.
Just received another servo for the rotating radar. :D

Been watching your build, very cool. I was just out on Stock Island today there were a couple of boats out at Fishbusterz on Front St. (Stock Island not Key West) It is located next to Hogfish Bar and Grill. You may want to stop out to Robbies Marina They have some old shrimp boats on dry dock they may let you climb on and take some pictures.

Robbie's is on Old Shrimp Road on Stock Island. Accross the Harbor from Hogfish and Fshbusterz. You may want to check out Old Island Marina on Shrimp Road also.

Alright Guys, I'm back from vacation and had a GREAT TIME. The only thing I didn't get to do was stop by Stock Island and check out the marina. We had a friend with us, it was 5pm when we left Key West, she had a 3.5 hour drive back home from Duck Key and had to be at work at 5am.

I have spent the last two days wraping up a few things.
I'll post the pictures and if you have any questions...................just ask.:D
The only thing I have left to do is install the windows and doors. I ordered some more white lights to be used as deck work lights. I still have to trim and glue a few of the rigging lines. Add the flags and buy lettering for the name.
I think thats about it.:):):D
