Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
1 Attachment(s)
Having just finished up the shrimp boat, I started looking around for a simple build. Wanting a big Tug boat, I decided on a springer. Whats not to like, simple to build quick and easy.
I used 1/2 pine for the boat sides and 1/8 and 1/16 balsa for the bottom. I'm building it as close to regulation as possible. I plan on a 600 series motor with a 2"/40mm 3blade prop. two 6v batteries in series. So far I have the hull made and the bottom glassed with two layers of 3/4oz cloth and Z-Poxy resin. The keel is done along with the rudder. So far I have about 6 hours in it. |

Wayne, you shure got bitten by the boat bug, boats are like Lays potato chips "you can't eat just one". And when it comes to boats "you can't just build one" Where can one get the springer plans? Larry

Hey Larry,
Here is one of the largest threads I have found. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...t=springer+tug |
RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
Larry,
Here is where I got the profile for the tug. www.gtmbc.org.uk/pdf/Plans.doc It will take a word processer like Word to open it. |
RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
Larry,
If that does not work for you let me know and I'll print another set off and put them in the mail. |
RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
I'm sure it must be like that for a reason but what's with the crazy rudder? I guess the big question is the what are you going to do with the <span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; color: black;" lang="EN-GB">superstructure? Keep on building boats the way you are and soon you will be adding boat parts to your </span>Solo Propellers & RC Products business LOL

By adding two pieces of triangle stock to the rear of the rudder the springer will turn around in its own wake. So I said to myself "what the heck, lets try it". I'm not sure about the super structure yet. Still thinking about that.:D |

Wayne,
Yes. Found it, printed it, cut to the edges taped two of the sheets together then decided to put a ruler on it to make sure it was exactly 18". Glad I did as if I'd taped it to the marks it would have been 19"! Wow, what a few silly mm's will do for you! Any way, I moved the third sheet over, which was the bow section, and it came out to 18" exactly with a nice round curve to the hull. A lot easier than laying it out on graph paper, which was an alternative from another plan source. Thanks Wayne. BTW, The Midwest Tug I've been modifying is nearing completion. Here are a few pictures showing what I started with, how far I got before I changed directions and where I'm currently at in the construction/finishing. The last picture is what inspired me to change the looks of the stock kit to appear more like the W.O. Decker Tug built back in 1930. I buildt the Hauser grate from 1/8" square stock then slowly fit it to the hull. Came out very nice. One thing I've noticed recently about RCUniverse is the pictures DONOT come up in the oreder in which they were put in. Frustrating! Bob |

One springer, glassed and primed.

RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
Hey Wayne, I thought that shape looked familiar. Upside down that hull looks suspiciously like this "flying car". No wonder you wanted to build a springer. ;)

Have a look here, some good info about the springer specs for the contest version.

RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
Thanks for the info John. Mine is to spec's expect the rounded bow. Which now makes it 19".
|
RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
The rounded bow does give it a distinctive look. ;)
The one nice thing about Springers, is you can construct more than one superstructure for it. Since you are such a creative person I am patiently waiting to see what the first one will be. |
RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
Not to clog up this thread but I drove by the airport today and it looks like all the tent's are set up for the "Monster Planes" event this weekend. Do you think they will mind if we dig a boat pond?

RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge

Hope you have a great (and profitable) time! Fly safe.

RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
Wayne,
Have you been busy working, filling orders from the Monster Plaanes weekend event? Bob |
RE: Scratch Built Springer Tug/Barge
Hey Bob,
I had a great time at Monster Planes and it was great to meet Quick (Dean) at the event. Now for the bad news. I'm out of work, Doctors orders, till I have a double Carotid endarterectomy. One next week and one the week after that. One is 90% and the other is 95% plugged. Not really looking forward to that. But I need to get it done NOW. So the Tug is sort of on hold for right now, for how long I'm not sure. I'll see how it plays out in a couple of weeks. |
