Guys!

Just acquired this beauty from SpaceShuttle1 on Sunday.:) Like to thank SpaceShuttle1 for this opportunity to have my very first boat Project and can't wait to finish all that needs to place this large lady in the water with "SCALE" effects so, I am not looking to break any speed records.;)

Any assistance with Links on where to select motor / ESC's would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gaupoman,

For motors Ibelieve three Graupner 700's (one per shaft) would be fine to get that big girl up on plane and movin' nicely. The 700's are priced nicely for what they do.

The ultimate motors for that boat would be three Astroflight 25 motors but recently their prices skyrocketed making them unattractive to most modelers.

For speed controls look at Harbor models and findthem with at least 30 AMPS and go from there. Because you need three motors there are variations you can do as far as speed controls go. I would use at least two speed controls for the motors but one per motor would be best.

Rich, Thanks for that recommendation using ASTRO Flight Brushed motors! I have several including an ASTRO 60 direct drive and other 25 sizes. What I need to see is how to provide cooling for these types and I have been looking into Trolling Motors such that I do not want to drill any holes into that perfect looking Hull. I was brain storming a bracket to install a 30lbs. thrust Trolling motor.

Guys, yes this was built from plans.

Hi Carlos,

If you have Astroflight 25's then just use them. If you go with Astroflight or a trolling motor either way you have to cut into the hull so why not make it scale?

Cutting into the hull and installing a Gease Box (Don't know the correct terminology) etc...etc.....

Remember, I am an RC Electric Airplane modeler and do not have any Boat experience.

The best thing to do is look at other builds from the beginning and look at the part when they are installing running gear. It is the same from boat to boat and it will give you a sense of what you need.

Also in one of these forums I posted a very detailed explanation on what is needed for a boat. When I have a moment I will see if I can locate it and post a link. It is somewhere here in the scale boat forum.

The hardware & props section of MACK Marine is a good place to go to shop for hardware for your boat.

Better yet, call Rich from MACK and tell him that you just bought a 6' PT boat and he will go over the options with you to get it running correctly. He is a very friendly guy and is always willing to help. Whatever you do please don't subject that great boat to a trolling motor.

Hi Carlos,

I found the link... Because you have a PT boat remember that you need three of everything and not two. So instead of two props, rudders etc you would use three and look at other PT boat builds for inspiration.

This is a lot faster than me typing it all over.. I hope this helps you a bit.. :)

I found the telephone number of a long lost friend that is the best RC Boat Modeler, I have ever seen! He will meet me in the morning at the RC Flying Club and will bring at least three large Boats for me to see (50+ inch long)!

Hi Carlos,

I like brushless motors on lightweight fast boats BUT am not a fan yet for scale boats. The issue so far is that brushless motors require a lot of amps to get them to do anything and high amp ESC's are needed to run them. I'm not sure if you are knowledgeable on LIPO but that is also a factor using brushless. So far I have not seen any company make high amp ESC's with reversing capabilities for brushless. Someday this will all change but as of current brushed seems to still be the best set up for scale boats.

Here is a link to a PT boat build going on another site. I think you should look his boat carefully and follow his thread. Any questions that you would possibly had was or will be addressed at some point during his build. I'm sure you will find this helpful. Before spending the money on the above motors or set up see what kind of setup this guy is using and ask questions. In addition get in touch with Rich from MACK products, he is an expert in scale boats and he can recommend a setup that will get that boat up on plane..

Guys,

Mark another good friend and who has lots of Boat experience as well (Setup and Running) and not particularly modeling or Boat Building gave me a Monster Trolling motor that puts out 30-lbs. of thrust on 12-Volts. It is not pretty but, I was pleasantly surprised on the amount of water it displaced in a large laundry container!!! Mark will be making me a custom aluminum bracket and angle mount to install this large monster Trolling motor assembly. Recall that I want a scale speed so, I just could not justify the amount of $$$ for scale motor and output shaft installation with expensive Brushless motors and Brushless ESC's etc...etc....etc......

Mark will be assisting me with the boat Center-Of-Gravity (1/3 from the Stern as I understand) and other items including installing the Aluminum Bracket and mounting of the Trolling motor.

Many of you might be throwing up but, no one will be seeing the Trolling motor while the boat is in the water nor I believe they would care unless they are some of a few like those that frequent here and are scale modelers.

Well....I'm a purist on the subject but at least you might be able to waterskii off the back of your PT boat... :)

Not on you life! There are lots of Alligators in our Lakes and Ponds. No telling what is lurking under water!!!:D

I would say that this Trolling Motor needs some sort of angle spring loaded mount to account when the Model runs to ground, otherwise I would need to come and get it before she does.

This Trolling Motor and resulting Propeller is very large!

Guys!

I have decided that this model is just too nice of a scale look to use the Trolling Motor with a similar Out-Board Motor look.

1. The Propeller is so large that I would need to seek out the model for Launch and Landing as it will run a-ground due to the large propeller.

2. The modification for some sort of mechanical device to lift the Trolling motor to avoid (1.) would be just too labor intensive and perhaps costly.

3. The boat's appearance will not be scale in any manner.

Summary:
Since I am not looking for fast speeds the setup inside the HULL would be ideal since I am not looking for any demanding power.

NEW PLAN:
A few pictures of what I found at the Electronic Shop Surplus Store and the Monster Motor is Brand New!

3 inch Diameter
6 inches Long Shaft (Tip to Tip)
4500 RPMs @ 12 Volts
8mm Output Shaft

The people at the Surplus Store was able to connect the motor and test it and it ran super quiet and smooth. It measured:

12 Volts @ 6.5 AMPS, NO LOAD

Guys,

It was fantastic weather conditions (Cooler) and I took advantage of Tony Lombardo's very nice invitation to his home and home cooked meals from his wonderful wife and spent all weekend with Tony showing me the ropes of RC BOAT Modeling.

This weekend we did the Stuffing Tube hardware purchases at ACE HARDWARE (The best ACE is in Titusville, Florida;) ) and we were able to get all hardware that we needed.

The Tubes were cut to length after careful measurements were performed on the Hull and outside. Then the Stuffing Tubes were integrated (two different sizes sliding into another larger diameter) and to keep em put, some soldering was performed.

So far it is looking great!:D

Baby Steps:
We are going to try out this Old yet still running motor in the PT311 and watch what happens. Again, I am looking for scale cruise and nothing with speed so, I will test the PT311 RC Boat model with this motor and test it's ability for Current, Voltage Measurements and temperature.

I looked high and low and seems like there is no official information from Emerson-Electric on this motor anymore except to say that the Product Plate shows:

Early morning progress allowed the completion of the Stuffing Tube and I was allowed the honors of injecting the Lithium Grease into the 90 Degree tube to insert the Grease and the motor ran much quieter and the RPMs ran up.
