1/10 scale barge, wood?
 

hey Guys,

im really interested on making a scale large barge. I plan to use that as the base for a more elaborate design......

Been new, I think a barge will be a good starting project.

It need to be big enough to hold 2x 1/10 scale crawlers. about 500mm wide.

But on a project this size what should I build it out of?

6 or 12 mm ply, or a combination.  If it is to be powered, do a google for " springer model boat plan ".  The basic design can be stretched to fit what you are looking for.

thanks heapse m8, I thought plywood was the norm, but had to make sure.

Yup - a lengthened, widened springer.  Needs to be deep enough to carry the payload and keep the deck and presumably expensive payload above water and the right end up.<div>It looks like the ramp has two winches - on a real landing craft that I got a look at, there was just the one - the line started at the port side rail, crossed the underside of the ramp in a tube, and fed back to the winch somewhere on the starboard side.  A sailwinch would do the job OK, or a servo modded for continuous rotation.</div>

I've Been studying different hulls, I'm assuming the springer is the best for stability?

It does look a little strange, to be honest it's all new to me

What about using the hull design from something like a lcm 3? With a very slight bow keel?

I'm conserned that I won't be able to land a springer hull at the river beads, I don't think it can get in far enough?

One other question, I've got some new Traxxas out drives, driveshafts and reduction box's. Would something like that be better for steering in reverse compared to a rudder?

I'm doing this project to test my skills, I've been playing with Rc cars for some years now and have enjoyed making static ship models.
So with any luck the things I've learnt over the years can combine to get a good result from this project.

I can say the pressure is on, My Dad scratch built a LCM and it turned out Awsome.... So jellous of it, so this will be my attempt.
I just don't have the weathering down pat yet...

Archimedes, who knew about things, noted that a floating body displaces its own weight in water.  If there is not enough volume, it sinks.  It will help if you know what weight you are handling and how much depth there is at whatever distance you hope to operate in.  If you can't have much depth, you need more length and/or width to compensate.  1 cubic foot of water weighs 64 lb, it doesn't matter what shape it is.

This looks like a fun build. I think it'd be cool to give your model all the grunge and aging seen in the pics you posted.
