Haven't seen any chains on the Midwest 47' COast Guard kit. Any interest?

Hey Kmot, I have never seen that paint scheme. I love it...making me think.....

RE: 47 Coast Guard Build
Kmot,
That came out awesome! I hope my USCG 87' Patrol Boat comes out as well as that did! |
RE: 47 Coast Guard Build
Thanks for the compliments, fella's! As pictured, it is still not yet finished. However, I did not intend to hijack LClark's thread so maybe we should get back to his build. ;)

RE: 47 Coast Guard Build
LClark,
Looks like your off to a good start. Its a great kit for the price. I started building the midwest 47' MLB several years ago and 80% complete. Got sidetracked on other projects and builds. I hope to complete it this winter! I really liked the kit but found a few errors in the instructions. I think mine was an early kit and they have since corrected the instructions. None that was a big deal,...just a little unclear or a step missing. Although I enjoy scratch bulding, I do really like the kit from midwest which includes most everything needed to complete the model. Everything fit well and the scale is good. If i get a chance I'll try to post a few pictures. |

KMot - please share more of your stuff...I don't want this just to be about me...
DS, looking forward to some pics of your stuff and some of your lessons learned.... |

Okay, another detail on my 47'er. I made a scale exhaust which will have the cooling water for the esc and motors flow overboard through this exhaust.

RE: 47 Coast Guard Build
Yikes! That last photo gave me chills! :p
Lots of carving and sanding to do there. |
RE: 47 Coast Guard Build
Kmot, I forgot to ask.....what is the ID (or OD) of the water outlet? I am going to do the same, great job there, hope mine comes out as nice.
I delayed the balsa bow blocks as long as I could. I hacked at it a little this morning, should finish shaping tonight. It is the only thing I don't like about the kit so far. |
RE: 47 Coast Guard Build
The boat looks like it is coming together well.
[8D] I would have probably used Pink or Blue rigid insulation foam rather than the balsa blocks, but I suppose thats what they supplied in the kit. |

Getting closer to looking like a boat. I am not happy [&o] with the fitment of the cabin to the hull and the rear deck to the hull. This will take quite a bit of carefull massaging to close the gaps.

RE: 47 Coast Guard Build
I've got to hand it to you LClark, this looks really good. I have the fiberglass version and didn't have to do all that hard work and I see your boat built from flat wood is looking very much the same! [sm=thumbup.gif]

Thanks K, it helps to have a well designed kit...but....the hatch is a problem. I think I will end up with a raised deck where it should be flat just to keep the water out. How did they handle this on the fiberglass hull?

It sits nice and flush on the deck and is secured with two screws. There is some foam coaming around the area and beloew the deck a couple of supports.
|
RE: 47 Coast Guard Build
Installed supports for a proper rear deck hatch. It looks like I can get it almost flush with the deck. Had to put in a lot of supports to build the frame work. I was able to design it to provide a positive seal around the rear of the main cabin as well. It will be held down with 4 screws and blind nuts (aka tee nuts) installed in the supports. Hatch is built as wwell, just need to drill the holes and install the nuts.
