Modified The Rear Fin. Before And After. Should cause less drag.

Deathwish,

How did you remove the prop, and have you found a replacement yet? And are you doing anything to boost range also (like using an 8-cell pack for the transmitter)? Regarding post 5, I always thought the upswept horizontal planes were to help the sub to surface when moving forward. But I do agree they are an automatic source of drag.

Thanks - Greg

I took out the two screws that hold the tail end. Then i pried the old prop off with a screw driver, still looking for a replacement. Been working on the Arm, Light's And Camera part of it. So hopefully i can get more picture's up soon. As for the fin the buoyancy should being it back up plus am adding a backup system to recover any lost ships which attaches to the sub.

Yes indeed. You can still find them still in the box for around $80-$180 on ebay. Some sites still have them for sale. They also go by many different name's.

Default RE: My Nikko Sub Mod's.

I was running my Nikko sub in my mother's pool tonight and I went ahead and did the rear fin mod by cutting off the upswept fins with a coping saw. I then found out one of the reasons for these fins: They keep the prop underwater when running on the surface. I corrected for this by adding two extra small weights to the rear compartment of the sub (where the prop/driveshaft is located). This kept the prop just below the surface just about all the time. Surface speed was definitely increased. "Porpoising" while diving was reduced somewhat.

My next plans are to replace the prop with something larger and possibly modify the fins on the sail to be angled down. The idea would be to give the sub a tendency to dive as soon as these fin are submerged. I would like to make them adjustable to find the best angle.

A much more ambitious mod is to replace the radio system with a Traxxas TQ 3 channel. This would keep proportional speed and steering (yes I would need an ESC) and the third channel can be modified to work a single speed reversible switch/speed control. Range and response time should be improved.

$95 on Ebay sounds a good deal for RTR Is it a static diver or dynamic? Do you have dimensions?

Hi all, just bought a used Seawolf sub. Have been having fun with it and thinking about modding it and found this great thread, thanks for all the info. Deathwish, how did you go with the wireless camera? did you get it working satisfactorily? I am thinking of doing the exact same thing..

thats a shame. I guess I got lucky, mine seems to be working well so far..so what did you do to waterproof the camera and mount it? I'm thinking of putting it n a small plastic case, sealing it up and attaching to the bottom of the sub.

I took out the front seating area, made a small enough think plastic to fit inside where the seating was i cut out a hole on the other circle so i could run a my wire through for the battery.. Then i super glued the it inside. The battery i would seal that up in a balloon then zip tie it.

Great job. Still have the sub? Just started running my Explorer again. My take is: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I like what you did with yours.

No i don't i sold it to as friend before i moved from St Louis. I live up in IL now. i do still have my USS Missouri but i just dont have time to work on them any more. I work so many hours now i barely get a day off. And if i do get a day off i cut grass for 3 other people besides my own. Plus the other project's around the house that needs fixed or painted. lol
