Default Revell 1/72 type VIIC, strange keel shape

At least it seems strange to me. Was it really that shape? What were the external cavities meant for?

I believe they were there to make space for the main ballast tank intakes at the bottom of the central hull, near the keel.

Thanks. I found a solution for building the stern planes linkage and at the same time being able to disassemble it, please see it in this forum.
