Sherman Three piece transmisson cover
Hi Guys Have been trying to make a Sherman Three piece transmisson cover.I have used a Mato cover and also a Tamiya, wanted to make it fit both lower hulls ,without to much modification to them. This means using standard gearboxes in both Tamiya and Mato hulls ,the only mods to the lower hulls are Tamiya remove the cross bar that fits across the the front of the hull,Mato remove the stand off mounts on the gearboxes,Cut the covers as seen in the photo 60mm wide (found the perfect thing to make the new part of the cover its a reel which had small electrical wire on it )I cut the reel in half so I could make two three piece transmisson covers.
There are differences in the two covers First the bolt holes are correct on the Tamiya .The Mato bolt holes I am not sure they have the same number but the spacing is different also there at a different angle ,I havnt seen photos showing this lay out ,but have seen the The tamiya .
The final photos the covers still need the bolts fitting (have them coming via that E- place)I will be using 12BA bolts and nuts also need a little filler in places.let me know what you think.the final photo the left one is the mato right the tamiya ,both fit Tamiya hulls and Mato hulls. They also fit tamiya and Mato uppers.

Hi I know there not 100% accurate, to do that you would have to fit Pershing final drives and move the gearboxes back.I wanted to see if its possible to make without doing major mods the the gearboxes,I think the Mato one looks a little better because it already stuck out a little more so the shape is nearer to the orgininal, they are a little wide the gap should be 71mm but this would mean drastic cutting to the gearboxes on the mato.

I think your method of doing that is interesting. I have saved your posting and photos to my computer files for future reference, it looks to be easier than the way I have done my 3 piece tranny covers so far. I have one or two future projects that will need the 3 piece cover. Thanks for posting your method.

RE: Sherman Three piece transmisson cover
Hi Jeff To me a Sherman should have the three piece transmission, nearly All the photos and films of the war show Shermans, Grants/Lees with three piece transmission covers with VVSS suspension.I think its because most of the early Shermans and Grants were sent to the British forces under lend leese.Even The Fireflys had them,we didnt have the M4A1 76mm but we did have loads of M4A1 75mm.

RE: Sherman Three piece transmisson cover
Hi I only have seen one photo of a M4 A3 75mm with the calliope it had the tamiya type cover singel piece. Most of the One piece covers were American not many British ones, has I said earlyer most of the early Shermans/Grants were sent to England /Egypt under lend lease, most of the Shermans after the fall of North Africa went to Italy ,the Grants went to Burma where they were more than a match for the tanks that Japan had there.

Do a Google search for "Sherman Calliope", or "M4A1 Sherman".

The bolts on the three piece cover look good.
The camo paint job on the thumb needs work. Trim the nail and add more weathering. The battle damage is realistic.
