RE: M4A1 Sherman from BOB (Grizzly)
Thanks Blitz.
Painting is taking two days longer than expected (whilst doing other stuff too), started on Wed and still not there . First time airbrushing a model, its seems the thinned OD green is way lighter than neat, and thats lighter still than hand brushing it. So after three coats of thinned (about half and half) looking crap, I applied about three neat coats and am close to correct shade (another one or two coats), that seems like a lot to me.....
Anyhow this is how it appears now;
the lighting here is odd so neither picture looks how I see it, but at least an idea.
Got some weathering to do when I get to a shade I like, any tips welcome though
Spent some time between coats doing the .50 cal, filling gaps, adding wooden bits, drilling out the vent holes and end and then painting. Accidentaly left some water from cleaning the airbrush and it came out all wet (was suposed to be matt black, I decided to leave it and it turned out like this;
Cheers

RE: M4A1 Sherman from BOB (Grizzly)
Right sorry I have been off here for a couple days, been painting and having trouble with compressor. Quite close to finish so thought Id post a couple pics ;
'Lucky Tiger' is from the game Forgotten Hope 2, a Battlefield 2 mod, thought It would be fitting
So had a few coats of Tamiyas OD green, most recent being two parts OD (XF-62) to one part Dark Green (XF-61) as seen on another forum.
Stencils of the unit numbers etc lovingly cut out by my girlfriend Ruby, turret and front stars were Tamiya ones but started coming off today so I hand painted the outline made putting them on
Rear star was from the Mato sheet, cut out the white bits which left the impression on the hull, so I hand painted in the outline
Put tools on and added straps using some leather colour electric tape. Have just sprayed varnish over, supposed to be matt but looks shinier than before
May do another layer of varnish tonight, then will dark wash and oil stain etc, waiting for Archer stencils to add before dust and dirt layers.
Cheers guys

RE: M4A1 Sherman from BOB (Grizzly)
Rye dont tempt me, dont think it would survive the trip to States!
Nearly finished the main tank stuff, may do a tad more weathering in time but pretty much all done. Lighting is rubbish atm so Il get a pic in the morning.
A couple things I been working on whilst taking my time with painting. Continueing the HL Pershing .50cal, I cut this rough shape from some card looking at reference pics to make the box around ammo tin;
(right side a little big). Cut up the ammo tin so just the sides left, made a new bottom and ends to accomodate the 9mm length of the rounds, painted then added Tam decal. With a strip of masking tape made a belt for the rounds then stuck above shape together and painted;
Added rounds into box and mounted on the .50;
Its not the best or most accurate but was cheap and quick to get! Not too bad looking, Im pleased with the outcome
Finaly removed the masking tape from the wheels (been on nearly a month), put on tracks after a little weathering and had a drive. Easy to notice the suspension isnt strong enough so will have to stretch out the springs soon. Anyhow will update tomorrow morn, cheers

RE: M4A1 Sherman from BOB (Grizzly)
So naturally a very dark morning, cloads start to clear around noon ans sun shines, but as quicly as that it tips it down . Finally stops raining a little while ago so I got in there before the light totaly faided!
But to start some of my progress whilst waiting, I wanted the commander to have a helmet on but knew crew wore the tanker hat underneath. I requested Nickmow to make a mould similar to the 21st C one and it looks great, I cut up accordingly so the Tam helmet (I think) would fit over as appears;
Helmet top left (duh ) removed section top right, whats left bottom.....left and moulded hat bottom right.
I painted this and fixed to helmet inner near bottom, look closely at commander in next pics (will do better pics with all details when properly finished).
(the '30' in yellow circle took ages to do and isnt perfect but close enough)
Got a couple little details for stowage left so will update with nicer pics soon hopefully. Cheers guys

RE: M4A1 Sherman from BOB (Grizzly)
Thought Id get a better pic of the commander helmet/hat so here;
Not the neatest I know but looks ok, perhaps possible for moulding?
Some final touches yesterday and today, started doing the periscopes and took some method pics;
So made shape on left with two bits of clear styrene (1mm thick) and 2mm strip of 1mm thick white, then covered ends with paper. Each flat dimension is around 10mm wide and 14mm long, its a rough assumed scale down but is quite close.
Then painted as shown on right leaving a 'lense', cut out the OD green shape from card to wrap around, its 10 by 5mm with a notch out for the slide lever thing which was later added made from a couple mm length of cocktail stick and painted. All above put together and inserted into gap;
Another thing I did today was this;
Made from ice lolly sticks with 1.5mm scale rope on ends. Shells are from Nickmow and are lovely, I think that is correct colour added to right end?
Cheers guys Dave

RE: M4A1 Sherman from BOB (Grizzly)
Thought Id put up a few of my favourite pics from Swindon meet on Sat.
I really liked the bridges!
Commander drunk from the liberated wine I guess;
He is still drunk here but I love this pic ;
If only I had some shells.....
He is just wasted isnt he?!
Anyway fantastic day, but now I have more to do on tank, not much to repair but got to paint and weather the metal bogies........
Cheers

Hmmm, it seems the Sherman has not been well over the hols and has a growth;
Anyone know what it could be? (probably too obvious )
And a little mod to get the correct wheels of the Grizzly/early Sherms, thanks to nickmow and his hard work casting the buggers
Toying with attaching original Mato tyres 'cos I like the markings but may just leave as is.
Cheers, Dave

The new Mato metal suspension with the smaller axle, make it a much easier conversion then in the past. The old plastic suspension had an axle so big there was little material left by the time you bored the hub out.

Thanks guys
Thought I would have a diagnosis by now, perhaps it wasn't as easy as I thought .

Maybe an image of another newer growth on the Sherman will help determine the cause/reason;
Anyhow the wheels are lovely, I think they are a closer size (by eye) to real though calculation says different. I have wanted these done for a while but the brain didn't click. YHR showed it could be done oh his Sherms so I decided to pester Nick .
Had to find a donor wheel from the 21st C Sherman, annoyingly I sold one a few months back so asked the buyer (panzer3 on rctw) to send me a spare from it and he kindly obliged.

You are converting it to a Sherman with the deep water fording stacks as used on some M4's on D-Day and in the Pacific Theater of Operations. I have almost finished my version of a USMC Sherman with stacks also, just doing some detail work on her.

More or less correct, they have been added and fabricated in such a way that they can be removed easily leaving no trace (see pics). The Grizzlys in the scene mine is moddled on have them as they were dipicting 1st Armoured tanks coming up from Omaha, my deep wading trunks are a rough copy of them so not strictly 'perfect'.

Taken a few days and different mixtures of paint to match the colour of the Sherm, then the bloody varnish darkens the colour anyway . Yeah so this about it for now, got the obvious weathering planned perhaps with some clumps of sand
