Default A rookie and his Pershing

Here are a few shots of my Tamiya M26, which is my first 1/16 rc tank.
I upgraded a few components including sealed bearings, gun elevation arm and 400 Motors.
I scratch built the mantlet cover bracket, tie downs on the sides of the storage boxes, tow cable and brackets, and the racks holding the jerry cans and extra tracks on the turret and front glacis.
I also added white metal extra track links, .50 cal shells, an ir emitter tube from DP, Schumo periscope covers, side bags from frontline models, sand bags, and rope.

There are a few more detail shots in my profile.

First RC maybe, but I can tell it's not your first armored model. [8D]

Really nice job. Loving the fenderless look and your scratchbuilt parts look great. The weathering looks good without being overdone. Like I said, nicely done!

Nice work on scratch making parts, cal 50 ammo belt looks cool and everything is kosher tied down. But a couple suggestions...is this Korea or WW II? If Korea, get rid of the aux periscopes for driver-bog...if WW II get rid of the infantry phone on the back. .

Cool Pershing Dave,

I like the shading in the paint job, it looks weathered but not beat.

Thanks for the compliments, and thanks to all the advice I received on this forum and the crew up in Danville.
I'm looking forward to Sept 3 battle day and breaking stuff off my tank.

The painting really was quite a process, it took much longer than I anticipated.
First I sprayed with Tamiya TS5, which I felt was too dark.
Then I used an airbrush and a thinned out coat of OD to lighten areas.
Then a wash of oil paint.
Then I pretty much dry brushed over THE WHOLE TANKwith model master enamel OD.
Then a coat of varnish, semi gloss on the turret and deck, flat on the lower hull and running gear.
I am not sure if you can even see anything other than the Ts5 and the drybrushing.
But it did result in some nice layering of texture.

The weathering was done with an airbrush and then tamiya WEATHERING MASTER.
I gotta tell you, the tamiya product really helps.

WOW Dave,,,,,

The M26 look fantastic.... I can't wait to poke some ventilation holes in it with my Panther or Jagdtiger. If it battles as good as it looks, I'm sure you will give me a run for my money. Please post some pix you took from your trip to Danville on the thread for the September event. Also, feel free to tell the guys what you thought of the place.

Which Tamiya Weathering product did you use? I like the M26 and your's is just perfect with the right amount and not overdone.

Not nitpicking but more of a general observation of most model tanks, but would tanks that have been out in the field have its hull running gear (road and idler wheels, swingarms, springs, absorbers, etc) caked with mud and dust with some parts of it soaked with oil?

I used 2 Tamiya Weathering Master sets, A+B.
These included the colors: sand, light sand, mud, rust, soot, and snow.
If I could find more sets on this continent, I would buy them all. ($10 per set)
I happened upon these as a local hobby shop.
They are literally make-up for your tank.
The material is a compressed powder acrylic, and I used small foam brushes and regular brushes.
The small foam brushes kind of smear the powder on the model, so it is good for streaks.
When using a brush, it is like dry brushing made easy.
I took my time and built it up slowly over the whole model.

The big question for me is durability.
If you make a mistake you can wipe it right off.
But over time, it appears to be more permanent.
I also found that spray varnish affects it dramatically, and lighter colors almost disappear.
So, I did much of it after I sprayed the varnishes.

Funny story, I found myself in a few local pharmacies looking through the make-up sections for more small foam brushes.

You are right, it probably would be caked with mud.
This whole process has been a learning experience for me.
After every step of the finishing process, I said to myself "oh sh*t, I just f*cked it up."
Then I would lose sleep.
I stopped when I felt like it was not so bad.
So, adding mud would have added to my stress.
Maybe on the next one.

Don't worry about the mud, dirt and oil stains Dave. The dirt at Danville will provide it with a nice coating in a very short time. I've "imported" several scale tons of it back to NJ with me for several years now.

I'm sleeping fine these days.
My only worries now are which tank is next and how will I pay for it?
Something German for sure.
I've narrowed it down between a panther or a tiger...

...or a jagpanther...

...or a panzer 4 w/ shurtzen...

I want them all.
I'll just need a second job.

I noticed you put in sealed bearings, what are they? Also would they fit the HL Pershing?

Thanks Danny

They were 5x8x2.5mm Rubber Sealed Bearings
all 42 of them
I got them here
http://mitosal.com/bearings.html

Since this is my first tank, I really can't answer your question about HL.
But I'm sure there are people on this forum who can.

I know how you feel Dave. You are very luck to get into this hobby at a time when there are so many choices available. I started with the dual clutch KT and a Tiger I. Over the years I've owned all the Tamiya FO tanks except the Pzr IV. I think it will be coming this fall however. I very much enjoy a variety of tanks since each dictates a different fighting style. You are welcome to try any of mine to see which fits you bill. From the huge custom Jagdtiger to my tiny Tamlong Stug III they are all fun. You and I are also lucky to have the RC tank battlefield at Danville to see and try all these tanks in action. Karen can get you whatever you need when you are ready.
