afv432's T34 gearbox mod
here you go
at the start i used a set of asiatam gearboxes, a set of wsn t34 upgrade gears (only utilising the larger gear)
some 5MM brass bar (driveshaft replacement) and a set of h/long drive shaft gears (metal)
some 2 mm ally plate for the lower hull to add strength when removing the battery box
i also added some brass to the front wheel supports as they were quite sloppy this tightened those up
remove the h/long gear
add this to the new drive shaft
install into the tank hull and adjust the length of the shaft to match
some packing may be required in the gear as it is actally 6mm id
driled and tapped the gear so i could add some grub screws
the finished mod
this isnt the final draft but if you want to retain the rear end as intended this is the best mod for that but you lose a fair bit of speed but the torque is insane
i will get some better pics of the whats in it now shortly

RE: afv432's T34 gearbox mod
now for the latest design
the compromise having to remodel the rear to accomodate the gearboxes
the benefits normal speed good torque
brass bushings replaced with tamiya sherman roller wheel bearings
now the gearboxes are also angled down to the rear to get round the suspension housings but they are fixed to a 3 mm ally plate
the finished article
if anyone wants i can strip down the rear for a more indepth view of how and what ive done

RE: afv432's T34 gearbox mod
Hi borealis
i never tried the stock h/long gearboxes at the time of the first attempt as all that was out there was the higher ones ie tiger and pershing
now with the jagdtiger and stug styles out there it's possible
the other drawback would be the driveshaft with the asiatams a 5mm solid bar fits nice and is also the same dia as the sprockets as well
so it keeps it simple
if memory serves the h/long shafts are 6-7mm so you would need to reduce this to the sprockets?

The possible obstacle is the available width of the hull to house two gearboxes side by side and the external gear too (to replicate the first solution you described).

Here is a Trumpeter T34 lower that I've been fiddling with. I'm not a big
fan of stock HL gearboxes but I happened to have these around and I'd cleaned
them up previously. There wasn't much to lose with these if it didn't work so I had a go.
I made aluminum mounting plate, modified the gearboxes' output shafts and installed a
brass driven gear for output. I like the low speed and torque. It has been a fairly inexpensive
change; I'm converting the model to the RX18 and a DBU

Wow nice job Tanque
the only thing i will say on mine over yours is that no special tools were needed only a dremel/hacksaw
it definatley gives another option for these great but underpowered Tanks
heres mine with the h/long leccies in it now sports an rx18 but you can get the idea from this of the layout
