Default Small gearbox sources.

I was recently looking at Hobby-lobby and other places and noticed the selection of small gear boxes from 280 to 400 seem to be dying off. Hobby-lobby alone use to have tons of little ones, and I am not talking just the airplane stuff. They had amazing ones with planetary gears and ones with mounts built in for all kinds of uses. Where did they all go? I have seen some places like robot shops have a few but they are all plastic types. I am surprised there is a lack of gearboxes out their in small size with metal gears or nylon. The smallest I found was a gear box for the PZ 3 and 4. Some general Tamiya ones. Still... what happened to the tons of ones that people use to have? I can't even find decent ones on ebay! I'd like to see some better gearbox designs, perhaps some with a 90 degree head would be good where width is a issue. Does anyone have links to good gearbox sources? -WR

I would suggest looking at robotics websites such as Robot Marketplane or RobotShop:

http://www.robotmarketplace.com/prod...rs_geared.html

http://www.robotshop.com/en/gear-motors.html

Hope this helps!

Thanks Captain Nemo12. I have looked at those sites, most are not very good for a small tank. I tried looking for a Tamiya 1/25 scale gear box, just to see the ratios. I have a hard time thinking that the ones I am looking at, will work. They look brittle and weak compared to what I am use to seeing. Hobby-lobby use to have a huge selection, they have very little now. I wonder why, or if more people are going to brushless instead.

I got this motor/gearbox setup from Robot Marketplace. It runs off of 7.2 and has ideal speed and torque, and it's small to boot:

Here it is driving the kit tracks:

Yes, please tell us which this is. Even for it size, I would still worry about the ability to move a tank that is about 3 to 4 pounds. And if they would work width wise in the hull, I am curious to know which ones these are.

Here's the exact motor:

http://www.robotmarketplace.com/prod...OPAL50-SH.html

Voltage:
4.8-14.8V
Output Speed:
300rpm @ 12V
150rpm @ 6V
Stall Torque:
58.9 oz-in (4241 g-cm) @ 12V
48.43 oz-in (3487 g-cm) @ 6V
Size:
1.46" (32.2 mm) long, 5/8" (16mm) diameter
Weight:
0.8oz (22.7g)
Gear Ratio:
Metal Spur gear 50:1
Stall Current:
Stall at 1.5a
Shaft Info:
4mm diameter with 2 flats; 9.5mm long

These are pretty high
torque set ups designed for robotics, I don't think you'd have an issue with a tank that's small enough to consider these. They fit side by sside in the 1/16 38T hull, which is pretty tight.

Not a bad box, but very pricey. Not sure how I would fit these into the area, maybe top and bottom stack, and use pulleys at the drive wheel. Just not enough room the width to fit them.
