It's awesome PC. The tank the Ordinance department should have built instead of the Sherman. I'm not saying the Sherman should not have been built but the time frames would have allowed this tank to see action along with the Sherman, long before the M26 was ready and would have really helped cut down on losses. There is agood bit of info on this tank and other prototypes in the book M26/M46 Pershing Tank 1943-53 by New Vanguard
Osprey Publishing By Steven J Zaloga who we all know is a very good historian.

Jim, The first pilot models looked good and a production number of 250 was approved. But there were too many expensive and problematic added items such as a remote control whereby the tank could be driven from the turret by RC or on the ground. With two remotes, turret could also have been operated. Some later models had electric brakes and waterproofing for all electrical components..

The biggest reason was maintenance and retraining of crews and mechanics. In Feb 1945 approx 200 T-23s could have been sent to ETO but this would require a complete change of inventory, personnel and spare parts. At that time, it was deemed unfeasable and rejected by the Armored Board. At this time two T-25s (from the original batch of T-23s with 90mm gun) were being tested which developed into the T-26 series....and we all know where that went. There was another minor issue about the weight and VVSS stability vs the T-25 with wider track and HVVS and T-25A1 with torsion bar suspension, both with 90mm gun. Service tests at Ft Knox concluded that" the T-23 was unsatisfactory for combat use." The T-26E3 prevailed.

The T-23 almost had a second chance. In Aug 44, the T-23E3 was ready for testing. It had Torsion bar with 19 inch tracks and proposed as the M-27 with electric drive,,but another model with the Ford Torqmatic Drive (same as Pershing) was to be the
M-27B1...but neither was approved. Both carried the 76mm gun.

Great project.  I am waiting to see someone build a T28 superheavy tank.  So far as I know, only 2 of these 90 ton tanks were ever completed.  They had two sets of track on each side and a 120 mm gun. per "American Armored Fighting Vehicles" by George Bradford.  jot

Here's my effort from a few years ago. It's just a static model ....... making it R/C was beyond my skill level and ambition at the time.

Great looking 28 Rex,

Only one I have seen in any scale. (other than 1;1). Glad someone had the resources...biggest thing that has held me back is the cost of so many Tamiya individual suspension parts. One I really would like is the T-30, but as many others have found, that back deck is an absolute bugger. Had Joel found someone to cast the rear deck molds for his proposed M-46 conversion, I would have done it and an M-47. Nice to see other getting into the lesser known tanks, especially the developement models which really didn't get far, but looked really cool.

Thanks for showing it. Be nice to see it rolling. [:-]

Great looking T28 Rex.  I wonder what the two winches? on the back were used for - loading shells?  I understand that the one remaing T28 is being restored.  Have not seen any other tanks with quad treads, but it makes sense in some respects since they could use existing tracks.  jot

The rear cranes were used in mounting/dismounting the outside set of tracks. Dismounted tracks were attached to the rear and towed like a trailer.

My original plan was to build my model R/C with removable outer tracks so that it could be rigged up as it shows in the photos on this website. I gave up that plan very quickly when I figured out what it would involve to do that!

Bill, the tank looks great...I just got done putting up all the parascopes on the m26(pia)....I do not see what so hards about doing the t28, tamiya was nice enought to make the suspension and tracks( just 2 shermans).............I have been looking atmaking a maus....just to do the suspension, you need4 of these kits....

http://www.asiatam.com/laufrollenwag...34p01ec3gv6ff1

so you could have 24 boggies and 48 wheels.....and the boggies would have to be modified so a wheel could be run on the rear of the boggie because the boggie could be centerlined over the track teeth....and you have to come up with a way to make tracks that are 10mm wider that the scale king tiger tracks???!!!....good site on the maus..

http://strangevehicles.greyfalcon.us...III%20MAUS.htm

The real kicker is how to hang the boggies, when you look at how the tracks are run over theboggie mounting suports.....crazy tank

The problem isn't the parts availability....for the T-28 you need 7 sets of HVSS suspension and tracks. Count the sets of suspension sets with those double tracks, then make longer shafts to connect to the extended, double sprockets and idlers.. The cost (to me anyway) of the Tammy parts is prohibitive and makes the T-28 an unatainable model.

your right, the t28 needs 16 boggies, a sherman kit has 6....so you buy a sherman kit( you need the the electronicsand hull anyway) and then go here and order the parts you need....

http://shop.aaftankmuseum.com/search...s.asp?cat=1844

I do not have the parts sheet from the sherman but the biuld looks like about a $700-800bucks.........The maus looks like a $1200 dollar build......thinking the E100 witha tamiya king tiger base is about $700-800.....oh the cost of being the guy with thecoolest man barbieat the battle day...

I had the $ame concern$ about the co$t of the $u$pen$ion ........ (forgive me, I just couldn't resist getting silly). On my model, the outside suspension that you can see is Tamiya Sherman. The inside road wheels and suspension are simple substitute parts. The tank rolls like a push me/pull me toy on a string, but that's it.......

Hey Rex, it looks super and who'se going to pick it up and inspect the inside rolling stuff

Just finished up on the T-23 with an ETO tow cable. Man, that tow cable is better than anything scratch made. Now some Dull Coat and tweeking in a few slop spots. It was a lot of hassle, but I'm pretty satisfied how it turned out. I removed the cal 50, as most test photos show it running without one.
