Hobby engine M1A1 Abrams
I picked up on Ebay a defective M1A1 Abrams brand new for under $50.00 wont start don't care cause I'm converting it to better electronics anyway .
What conversions are everyone who has one doing to make it a better tank .
I have seen Phil's from RC Tankwars on youtube and a few others from here .
Thanks
Jimmy

Phil has about the best conversion going. He uses my road wheel spacers on the older style wheels then upgrades the gear boxes and tracks. bThrough in an nice little ElMod and your good to go. You can do the mechanics and go with YHR's DBCRC3 alsowith Benedinni. Very nice set up also.

Hi Panther G
Yes I looked at the wheel spacers on Phil's web site and the gearboxes he has .
Kenny Kong has tracks and sprockets for the M1A2 the sprocket fits tamiya gearboxes .
Looked at what they did on DAK also .
I have two sets of EL-Mod ECO version .
What tracks Phil use the new metal Leo tracks or the original Leo tracks .
Thanks

RE: Hobby engine M1A1 Abrams
The elmod sounds are really good and I agree with using the KK trakcs and spacers for the wheels. As for TU's, you might want to contact Daryl Turner ands see what magic he can work to get tamiya gearboxes into this beast. Might be a really nice setup.

RE: Hobby engine M1A1 Abrams
The Kenny Kong tracks are great. I have a set. The downside to them is that they add a lot of weight. I found that the weight slowed the tank down. For battling I went to the Tamiya Leopard tracks with the KK Abrams sprockets. This enhanced the performance of the tank. My Abrams has an ElMod (installed by Phil). His stainless steel gearboxes with 480 motors on them. I has to do some dremel work to install the flash. I am using the stock recoil (not the best). I am trying to figure out how to mount an asiatam unit in the tank. The inside of the turret is small. I know there are those that have used servos for the recoil. I would love to see how it's done.

You can get a recoil board from RC Tankhobby.com that will make a servo work as a recoil its $27.00 . http://home.comcast.net/~chioc/index.html
I seen some were here that someone took a HL Recoil or a HL BB unit and cut it and fitted a Tamiya recoil to it that way you still could use the HL type new or old gun elevation unit with it .

That is perfectly understandable. The last time I bought them from Karen they where only 60.00bucks apiece. Tamiya prices have all gone up since then, and so has all the other manufacturers.

I am using the tank hobby recoil unit in my USMC Sherman and love it. I have not had any issues with it at all. No, I am not affiliated with them at all.

When it's priced at $60 a piece is that tracks for both sides (a set) or is it $60 for one side?

I agree with Panther G.... I have metal tracks for my M41 Bulldog, and don't really see much of an advantage to them... except maybe easier to brush the dirt off in comparison to the plastic tracks.
