When that kit came out, NiCads were the norm and the capacity was pretty small. I used (still do) 2 1500 mAhs in mine. But with the NiMHs packing 5000mAh these days, one would be okay too.

I get probably a solid 45 minutes of hard driving with 2 1800 NiCads, so it's really a matter what you want to do in terms of chargers and batteries.

Are there any brands we should avoid? Or any real good ones?

One 5000mAh LiPo and good charger. Also you need "Y" connector from accu to DMD and MFU.

One Nickel-metal-hydride battery (NiMH) at 4000 or better is good enough with stock motors. Two are even better especially with an upgrade in the motor dept.

Of course, the charger will be key in managing battery life and both shouldn't bankrupt you.
