Rex, those 1;200 are a lot like the lead tanks I used in a Desert Storm diorama I did. 3 x 5.5 feet and had to show the entire area and tell the story. Details are fair but in such a scale, they do well. I believe those were war gaming tanks like around 1;274. It would be interesting to see that or a Kursk diorama in 1;16[&:] .

Kursk in 1:16 ... that has possibilties! If we could get the guys in DAK to buy a few thousand acres of Arizona desert, and convince the scale tank manufacturers to donate or give us a really big quantity discount on appropriate tank models, that could be fun.

A square mile of Nevada desert that isn't redioactive could work too.

But then, a Normandy D-Day landing might be easier (fewer tanks), and Green Amphibian could build a few dozen DD Shermans. Only a couple would actually have to float and make it to the beach, for the sake of historical accuracy.

But then we would need ships and landing craft.

And an ocean............Hey! there's one near my house!

you know what I'm thinking? since the gearboxes for 1:16 tanks are too bi for the M3...maybe gearboxes from the 1:25 chieftain could fit? (took me a while to think about that...hamsters are slow before christmas, maybe because of all the Chivas Regal I drink...)

My hampster came to the same conclusion with Jim Beam......

I got a 1/24 th scale Abrams last year to see if it had the size and power to use on some of the smaller dimension 1/16 scale tanks I want to do. Here is a photo of the size between the Verlinden 120mm M3 Stuart and the 1/24 Abrams tranny. I wish I could just get replacement trannies for 1/24 tanks without having to buy the entire tank. I haven't checked into that yet. Anybody know if there is a source for 1/24 trannies only?

Hey........ya just made my day! I knew about the first site and have a number of those little plastic gear boxes in my stash.

But the artistic hobbies site made me give myself a Christmas present. I got two of the Tiger replacement trannies to play with in the near future..

Thanks!

You must have boughjt the last two, Rex - they're showing as "out of stock" now. I have an unbuilt M3 that eventually needs a motor/trans; if you want to experiment on it (which is another way of saying "do all the hard work and then send it back"). Ha.

Seriously good work, though. I've loved the M3 ever since I read my first Haunted Tank comic book, and you've done a great job on your series of them. I thought it was a neat idea for you to build different turrets and "add-on" parts that would change the appearance of them. -Mike

Mike
I sent an email about when they might get more of those 1/24 tank trannies. Here is the response I got

Hi Rex, Yes I can get more but it would be at a higher price by about $7-10.00 . It's costing us so much more these days to buy from China. So new price will be between $27-29.95 per engine. Not sure if it's worth the price??

Hi Rex. Thank you for the offer, but I'll decline. Last year I bought a 1/24 VS Sherman that I could strip down to use the workings to make the M3 operate. (It was a post by somebody about making those tanks compatible with the Tamiya TBU that got me to thinking about using one of them as a basis). It's still farther down the to-do list than some of the others, for now.

Yeah, I agree that the new Five-O can't replace the original....just like Sean Connery was the best 007.
