HELP! Mato 3:1 Main Shaft snaps 2 days before Battle
Okay, here's a Hail Mary!
Does anyone have a left 3:1 Mato main gear shaft or even a complete 3:1 set of gears for a HL King Tiger?
And, can anyone ship overnight to Scottsdale, PHX in time to install and battle Satruday morning?
I can PayPal immediatley!!!
Or, any other - better gears that can be mounted easily in a HL KT?
Looks like my first DAK battle with my custom HL/KT is done for.....
I was testing the tank last night and went through some light pebbles. Yep, caught a track and snapped the main shaft of my Mato 3:1's. I have the 480 cans and they are POWERFUL. Fortunately, I popped the fuse before anything else was damaged.
In examining the main shaft that snapped (and stripped my shaft support and bearings....), the manufacturer drilled the hole for the hex bolt that locks the retainer ring too deep. See the picture. The hole was drilled almost half way through the shaft, weakening it greatly.
Crap, can't seem to get this tank going...
About ready to go back to crashing helicopters... (just joking).
Please PM me if anyone can help.
Who makes a better (STRONGER) gearbox?
Thanks!

Here's the photo of the snapped gearshaft:
NOPE, Server won't accept the picture. I'll try uploading later.

Now, if I had a lathe.....
I was looking at a Harbor Freight lathe yesterday, but the amount of grease on it was daunting...

Well the real KT had trouble moving too.
With the weight of that model maybe you want to move up to something more substantial in gears.

I broke 2 of those same shafts in the span of a couple months... Seem's they just weaken over time, especially with the metal tubs and wheels, etc.
I noticed the hex retaining screw hole was also drilled very deep, I suppose that's just how they build them!

You should just fabricate some Tamiya boxes from the museum (when you get there) and you'll save a ton of money at the same time.
Sorry to hear about your luck. Looks like you have ran out of time on the overnight option.

RE: HELP! Mato 3:1 Main Shaft snaps 2 days before Battle
I'm starting to look for something heavier. I can't use anything that is longer then the Mato 3:1 as I have a heavy aluminum bulkhead right behind the existing gearboxes.
I just received my 6 in 1 Mini Machine Tool from Hobby King for $90 +-. I have a rod of brass I'm going try to turn on the lathe that is part of the lego machine. It will be interesting...
Maybe I can fabricate my snapped shaft in time for tomorrow?

I'd love to use the ETO gearbox, but I would have to remove a bulkhead that's integral to the KT's structure. I think it will be a lathe so I can learn how to turn shafts and gears!

RE: HELP! Mato 3:1 Main Shaft snaps 2 days before Battle
The 6 in 1 Mini Machine Tool is a bust....
Pissed me off so bad I went to Harbor Freight. They had a 7x10 mini lather that was $599 on sale for $499 and with a 20 % discount, I walked away with it for $399.
I'm pretty impressed with it for the price.
However, as I never before operated a lathe, I tried to turn a Mato 3.1 gearshaft in aluminum. I actually turned it to size. But - being aluminum - it twiisted like a pretzel.
So much for tomorrow's DAK battle...
But, I did take the plunge and now I have a lathe I need to learn how to use.
So, just to reiterate my journey in tank land:
10 months ago I started soldering on a Heng Leng after I learned that there was an infrared battle system and it wasn't campatable with a Tamiya. I learned how much a Tamiya cost and had a heart attack. I spent three time (okey, maybe 5 times) on parts, pieces and misc. stuff trying to build a heavy metal KT...
Met a lot of really nice people!
And now I have a lathe in my garage. New learnign curve. I'll let everyone know how it goes!

Now that you have dropped off the machine tool cliff there are a couple of sites that you need to look at: littleMmachineshop.comand micromark.commini-lathe.com is a good site to look at also. jot

I started with www.mini-lathe.com last night after realizing I was trying to cut an aluminum rod the wrong way. Thanks, I'm off on a new journey and one which I've wanted to learn about for a number of years.

I'd go impact in that case! They're very good about getting back to enquiries so they should get you the sizes. Failing that I can measure up a set of mine.
