Default SU 85 Rebuild

I am upgrading an old WSN SU 85 conversion. First picture is the existing tank. I will be adding new electronics and and getting it set up for FPV use. Being that it is a turretless tank it lends itself well to having an onboard camera. This will be mounted internally and the view will be through an open front hatch.

Will be adding new recoil and elevation mechanism as well

First thing I did was strip it down and and rebuild the interior with a good speaker. On-off switch and charging jack were moved and positioned under the rear transmission inspection hatch.

Mechanically this is the stock WSN with metal gears and plastic track. I have tweaked the drive and installed set screws on the final drives. Mechanical clutch is long gone.

Umm, that is the Imperial Models SU-100 with the 85MM gun, or even could be called an SU-85M.

Glad to see you getting back to this. I remember back when I first met you we were working on our 85 &100's. Still have thoughts of getting back to mine.

TankZone used to carry those but since Andy isn't making them right now...

I tweaked the T-34 sound set and baffled the speaker to enhance the base. Has a more throaty sound with a nice "feel"

Hi Dan,

Could you give more details on how you baffled the speaker?

Thanks!

It is just a wood plate set about 1/8" off the speaker as shown in the pictures

Did you also use some sort of metal covering?

The metal covering is a speaker grill. I just used that and fastened the wood plate with stand offs.

So what do think Rudy? I have sent you multiple pictures of the kit which will include the correct-era wheels and tires (not assembled and brand new) the remaining fuel tank so it will have the correct number of four, an extra barrel if needed and the upper hull tossed in so you won't have to wreck your existing tank. Plus other small items like the WSN light and operational drivers hatch.

Only work performed was epoxying the superstructure together (and has been like that for over 6 years) and the hatch hinges will have to be scratch built by you.

All for 150 shipped or I list it on eBay where it will sell much higher for this rare and out of production kit.

Here are some shots of the recoil set up. A made it so it would fit through the mantlet opening for easy service, I then use Brass hex screws to mount the mantlet to the tank.( Only 3, the rest are going to just hex rod ends.)

Final interior shot. All the electronics including the Benedini amp

Oh ya, it ended up a SU 100. I went with the bigger gun.

Great looking build !

I have a built SU85 conversion from the T34 WSN. It is fully Tamiya battle ready with traverse and elevation.

That looks good. I tried traverse on this build but I only had movement in one direction. To correct this meant milling the resin mantlet more then I cared to at this stage of the build , and as IR combat is more shotgun then sniping I thought I would try it on the next one.

Cheers

Your approach looks solid

I have been playing around with the Benedini and found I can save the engine reving sound to a sound address that can be activated at will to give me a secondary way to rev the engine. The primiary way is through Transmitter stick mapping on set up. This other way is triggered from an activation point. I replaced the Machine gun sound file with the engine rev file. Any time I want the engine to rev up I activate what used to be the machine gun

Also shows how bright the LED are on the modifed HBU sensors I put together.

Sounds great Dan.

Looks like this one needs an extra fuel tank too (SU-85's and SU-100's had 4)... don't ya think?
