Hooben Elefant Build Log

RE: Hooben Elefant Build Log
GREAT! And I will follow too.
Please address all the issues on this kit that have been talked about but not outlined in any pictorial way. This will put to bed those fears that other members have discussed.
Also, I have one lined up to build and I think it will be next. At least so because it's in the way.
Are you going to finish it like the picture you have included? I really liked that episode of Tank Overhaul! And are those gearboxes pretty quiet? I think I will use Tamiya boxes in mine.

Good luck Bill,
We will all be cheering you on. Keep that bottle of scotch handy and make a tally of how many times you said "What was Hooben thinking." It is a very sharpe looking model. I'm only 30 miles away. How did you make out with the Tamiya Sherman you bought from me? I plan to do mine like the APG Elefant. I've got pix of it going back 40 years to when I was a kid visiting Aberdeen with my dad. He was in the 5 Armored Div. In France and Germany...Luckily it was during the Korean War.

RE: Hooben Elefant Build Log
Chiefson: I got it from Immortal Hobbies and I'm using the Clark TK22 board.
The upgrades I purchased were the metal gun deck plate, zimmerit kit, metal machine gun kits, Misc fittings, and the recoil/elevation/rotate upgrade in the kit itself. It now includes servos and mounts instead of the old setup.
Bob: The Sherman is done except for weathering. Deciding on how far I'm gonna go with it. I'm already shaking my head looking at the instructions. lol Just got my painting supplies in today so now it's build the Elefant and weather the Sherman

Instead of the motor gear setups for recoil, elevation and rotation in the instruction manual for those features, They supplied servos and mounting plates. Has a nice part checkoff sheet but no instructions on how to put it together. I built my own in my HL Bulldog. I figure out it will work. and post it here.

Could you get some pics of the servo mount plates, especially on the traverse? Was this on the stock kit (the servo mounts) or on the upgraded trunnion? I'll be honest in its stock form the fants pretty straight forward. To get the most out of it check out the link above to the group build. Lots of great little mods to make it a really reliable fighter!

I did here the original electronics hardware was crappy and people were replacing it with Tamiya or EL-mod but was not shore if the original servo mech with the limiter switches was crappy too .

RE: Hooben Elefant Build Log
Since you brought up the subject Jeff, Are they a necessary upgrade? My tanks are still pretty new and haven't dealt with any track problems yet.
I am starting on the main gun now and will find out how the new servo setup will install. Pics to follow soon.

I think on the German tanks a certain amount of track sag is important. There's no word out on the plastic tracks on the kit so they may be up to the task, but if you want track sag.
Like the Tamiya Jagdpanther and Panther, or even the Tiger I. Plastic tracks don't cut it for me, but that's me.

Elefant track pins work themselves out during usage. Unfortunately, they seem to only come out on the inboard side, which is bad.
Like any tracks, you need to glue the pins in if you run it lots, or they'll come out...eventually. Just use a very thick glue (I use CA gel and an accelerator spray) so the glue doesn't run down the pin across the track link and glue it all in place.

I had a lot of issues with pins working lose inboard and then having them jam up on the hull. Liking the servo mounts I might have to see if I can get some as I'm not happy with the standard gear! Back on track (get it!!...:/) I found the sag was fine with plastic tracks.

No one said the plastic tracks would not work Tom, he just asked if they were a "necessary upgrade" in which I gave my opinion.
So, it was just an opinion.

Thanks for the information on the tracks. I'll seal the pins in the track. If they don't behave properly I'll go for the metal ones.
Started the gun today ran the flash wire and glued the barrel. Sanding the seams filling in. Will post pictures when I get it farther along especially on mounting the recoil servo.
Here's another question, On the real Elefant tank, when it got painted did they use brushes or spray it on?

I'm sure it was sprayed on.
Unless Tom wants to counter-dict me on this one too?

RE: Hooben Elefant Build Log
Depends on the unit and the year. Early on and midway through the war, most, but not all, had their cammo sprayed on by the Werkzug or, in the case of many mid and late war machines, by the included sprayer using tins of pigment diluted with whatever solvent was at hand. However, there's plenty of photos out there of cammo, and especially winter cammo, being applied with brush, mop, brooms, or literally fists full of straw.
