Transmission Troubles
After 6 months of idle time I took my Tamiya Tiger 1 for a drive. Noticed it was pulling to the right more than usual. Significantly more than usual. After a very quick inspection I have determined that the gear that drives the drive sprocket gear has flattened 3 teeth in the nylon part of what appears to be a nylon/brass combo gear? I could be wrong. Really do not want to buy an entire gearbox for just 1 gear. Any suggestions are welcome as well as maybe a gear location!

Try the tank museum at Danville VA. The link is www.aaftankmuseum.com
They carry most of the Tamiya line and are a great place to get spare parts and such. I recommend you call them and see what they can do. Make sure you have the part(s) number for what needs replacing.
Good luck.

I haven't spoken to them recently about it, but yes, a few years ago I stripped out a gear in my Tiger 1 gen2 gear boxes I ordered two Tamiya R/C replacement parts bags through AAF. I'm pretty sure it was them. I want to say the price was in the $26 range then.
I found the Tiger on eBay for cheap. When I received it I immediately found that it had been poorly constructed and abused. The port final drive shaft was bent and detail parts were missing. I ordered the shaft and gear bags to repair the transmission. Later, when I was running it in mid-height grass, I noticed it was starting to run in an alternating smooth-lurch manner. I disassembled the gear boxes and found one or two (can't remeber exactly) of the metal/brass gears had stripped teeth. It was an easy fix with the parts I already had. I still have one of the bags unopened and can post a photo tonight if you need.
I did a quick check of the AAF PX website and can't find them listed so that's why calling would be the best bet.

PanzerAce,
I've since upgraded my T1 to Impact all metal units and my original (repaired) Tamiya gen2 gear boxes are not being used. AAF wants $58 each for the left and right. I can do much better than that for a fellow tanker if you like.

I do not believe that Tamiya offers the replacement gear set bags anymore. tis subject has come up in the past and it was then that we found out that the AAF may not have them anymore. It would still be worth the email or phone call to find out though.

Tamiya does again offer the gearbox rebuild kits. Was a post about them a couple weeks ago from one of the so cal tankers.

Bob,
Here are pictures of my original TUs. These have what appears to be black nylon/plastic gears that are closest to where the motors mount so they look like type 2 gear boxes? Also shown are an unused set of Willy's 3:1 gear reduction boxes and the replacement bag of parts I mentioned. I can confirm I did get the shaft bags from AAF.

Those are Type 3. Type 2 has, counting back from the final drive shaft as #1, on the third and fourth shafts black plastic gears. Type three has brass and Type 3 has a slightly lower gear ratio than Type 2. Can't upload a photo, net is spotty thanks to the attempted coup d'etat up in Kiev at the moment. Net has been off and on for a week and slow as a fried snail going uphill with a 200 knot headwind.

So with light of this new info should I find gen 3 transmissions and buy them? This was an older kit when I bought and built it.
Found this, http://mitosal.com/transmission_unit.htm Wondering this would just be the best option instead of putting anything other than brass/steel back in there for it to just strip again. Any thoughts on this unit and for a really obvious and dumb question... Is that the price of a set of 2 as a whole "unit" or is that just for a left or right?
Also these from Your site Bob http://www.etoarmour.com/product_det...?productID=S02 These being hardened steel gears would be better. From my experience of working with stainless I've found that it is soft as well as brass.

My SO2 systems will be available again shortly. The gears are not stainless but rather hard steel. The Tamiya Type 3 transmissions are what is available for quite some time The only difference in the Type 3's is the length of the final drive shaft outside the transmission for the various tanks. If memory serves Tiger 1 and KT are the same, Sherman is a little shorter than KT/T1, Panther longer. Leo 1 uses Panther types, haven't measured KV and JS although I have both. I would bet they are either Panther length or KT/T1.
Type 2 was a flash in the pan that didn't last that long. The Type 1 that came with your kit are well known to strip one of the soft nylon gears, plus they were way too fast without the add on gear down. Send me an email or PM and I'll fill you in better on your options. If I don't reply within a few minutes, please be patient. As stated earlier the net is in and out.

I have a set of willy's 88:1 boxes. his are set up in terms of actual reduction so the numbers are quite different. when you really scale it the actual 3:1 or 4:1's are not an accurate as far as the true reduction. My set are awesome TU's . The panther g i have them in can literally climb a tree.
Seems my right shift button is not working very well. LOL
