Default LEOPARD 1A4 Tank Scratch built 1/12 scale

Hello everyone

Here you will find the whole building process of my Leopard RC tank, where it began as an idea, to sheets of plywood, to a fully functional R/C tank. It took me 6 months to complete, working on it whenever I got the time. I am not adding a lot of comments, I let the photos explain themselves. Feel free to comment and ask questions!!

Here it is all finished Weight : 12.5 kg scale : 1/12

The real deal.

Where I got most of my measurements.(An old war machine magazine)

Drawing everything on the back of an old Ron Belling poster scale 1:1

The rear drive-train of the tank. Two 12V cordless drill motors, each with their planetary gearbox. Angle grinder gears to deliver the power through the 10mm stainless shafts to the drive sprockets.

Steel swing-arms custom bent at an engineering shop.

Plastic track pads, and chain track assembly. The 2 tracks consist out of 590 parts, not counting the chain.

Cutting my wheels on a lathe, it was a lot of fun but after wheel nr. 10 I just wanted to finish.

The end result. x2 ball bearings for each wheel, press fitted into the bearing cavity.

Turret and upper hull, all constructed out of model grade plywood 5mm and 3mm. I love working with model grade ply, its an awesome material.

Gun elevation and turret rotation achieved with standard servos ( turret rotation servos was modified to rotate continuously).

Adding some detail with wire, dowels, pins and thin ply.

The 2 drill speed controllers with reverse, operated with servos. It took me a while to figure out how to build them.

Everything is coming together...

Suspension working nicely.

Test layer of paint added.

Hand painted decals

The Goldilocks size RC tank...

Enjoying the weathering process

Thanks Dan.

Yes, I tend to agree with you on that one.

Very nice work! I love the size and it's very true to scale too.

Wish I had one THIS large!

Thanks Jeff,

Hehe Yes, I tried to build everything exactly to scale. But I could have added more detail to the wheels and sprockets. Maybe the next holidays...

Hello wsn123

The whole tank is completely controlled with only 4 servos. One to operate the turret elevation, one modified servo for the turret rotation (rotates continuously) and two for the speed controllers. The two speed controllers in the tank are the drill trigger speed controllers which I modified to be operated with servos. I took out the stiff coil spring in the trigger speed controllers and designed a cam mechanism which engages forward and reverse. All cordless drills have this forward and reverse switch, all it does is reverse the direction in which the current flows. And that is about it, I only use 4 channels, and the receiver and battery pack is housed in the turret for easy access. The two servo cables coming from the two speed controllers just go through the center shaft of the turret to the receiver.
