Default Big Red One Museum at Cantigny

Hello, fellow Tankers! Here are some pictures from Cantigny in Wheaton, IL. The whole thing is a ground with a few different attractions, but the one I come for is the museum dedicated to the Big Red One. There are many things here, from a recreated WWI trench, to a recreation of Omaha Beach, as well as one of VIetnam. Outside of the building that contains this all are multiple US tanks, ranging from WWI to Desert Strom. I've been there many times, but I've never really thought about posting pictures of the tanks. Needless to say, now that I have an iPhone it's a lot easier.

Here's the contact information, if you are interested:

Nice pictures. The M-60 took me back to my first tank as a 2nd Lt. in Germany in 1969. We still had a mix of M-60's and M-60A1's.

Hi Rollin Armour
Nice pics. If you happen to be in the vicinity again, would you mind taking some closeups of the casting numbers on the M41. It's a bit unusual, in that it's an early construction one, unlike most that you see around, which are later builds. The turret casting number - SER 203?, the cupola casting number - in front of the commanders sight, the hull casting number - beneath your daughters(?) feet, mantlet casting number - below the gunners telescope cover. You'll notice that the headlight set up is different from the later ones - horseshoes - when viewed from above - in front of where the lights are mounted, the tow rope brackets are different from the later ones too. The engine deck grilles are quite different - Vs 3 doors on both sides for the later builds, these early ones have 5 doors on the left & 6 on the right - count the stops that stick up. It should also have the early Gun Travel Lock, with the overhanging pivot point - the later ones had the pivot point over the centre of the mounting. There is another early one at Ft Shelby Mississippi. I know a bit about these as New Zealand had 10 of them - the Bovington Museum one & the one at Puckabunyal, Australia having come from NZ.

Like Radfordc the early M-60 takes me back as to 1960 when the first ones were conning off the line at the Deroit Arsenal
to be shipped to Germany. I was a 2nd/Lt and PIO. Still have a cast metal gold painted model that several were presented to
generals and VIPs.

I wish I could find a model of an M-60 so I could paint it up with the markings of my old tank...B66, 2-64 AR, 3rd Inf Div

Chesapeke Designs used to sell a really nice resin turret kit for the Tamiya 1/35 kit. I built two of them years ago. It may
still be available.

Tamiya still makes a 1/35 scale model of the M-60. If you wanted an early M-60 couldn't you add the M-48 turret to the M-60 lower hull?
