Sherman variant kits?
#26
Does anyone make kits to change out the 105 sherman to a 75mm or 76? I know Mato has a 76 but they aren't available at this time and Mato doesn't have a date for new ones. Tamiya's are out there but I can't afford one.
Also, why are there so many 105's? They weren't the most plentiful of the sherman types by far. Is it do to the fact that an airsoft BB won't fit through a 75 barrel? At any rate thanks for any help.

Hey Terry! I just realized I have a Mato T23 turret I will not be using. It's not the best as far as accuracy but with a tiny bit of work, change out the over-sized barrel and reduce the height you can have a M4A3 76MM tank mounted on a HL Sherman. There will be some work but it can be done.
If interested PM me an offer. Might save you some money?

This is exactly the Sherman I want to build. Can you tell me more? Like what suspension is that? Is that exclusive to Tamiya or are there any other manufacturers that make shermans with that suspension? Which Mato tank did the turret come off of? Did he use the mato upper hull (deck)? Where did the gun come from? Is this what they call an Easy 8? If not, which sherman is this? Any info at all will be more than I have now.

You want to build a M4A1E8, which is basically the well known M4A1 with HVSS suspension, because that the E8 suffix
The IDF bought many to French before the six days war some of them were known as M1. There were M1 with VVSS and HVSS.

I think you are talking about a Sherman Firefly. I understand you are an inexperienced modeller but I guess still you can read, so go on with a good book, there are lots our there, for Sherman, plus you can use google. Good luck

I really don't want to get into the IDF tanks. I guess the best way to describe what I want to achieve is this - I want to build a replica of the very best Sherman that was available on the battlefield on May 5th, 1945. That may be a lofty goal for a dumbass old hippie that's a major rookie in this hobby, but you know what they say - No guts, No glory.
An M4A3E8 or the M4A3 with VVSS and a T23 turret, 76MM? The plain old 105MM version in both suspensions were still around in '45 too.

Inexperienced? I've been building static models for over 45 years. I've had work displayed in museums. I've probably forgotten more about building accurate scale models than you'll ever know, so if that's the best you can do then just keep your mouth shut, eh?

I had to trim approx 2 to 3mm off each side of the Mato chassis to fit a HL hull over the top, so I'd anticipate you'd have to do the reverse going the other way. My concern at this point would be that this would make the undersized wheels and tracks of the HL more noticeable?

I didn't want to offend you at all, just made the point. In the URL I gave the overview of the article explains what is the M4A1E8, is not an IDF tank although they used. It was a WWII tank bought for IDF.
I have been research about Sherman since 8 years, so I guessed I could spent time offering some help.
I'm modelling since 54 years now, but I think it isn't the point to show our stars, don't you think so?
I was explaining what you wanted and where you could find information and still asked. Please read my post answering your questions.
There are lot of books about Sherman in different TO, you can look for them and read, also Wikipedia and lot of websites like Sherman minutia...etc, but if you ask here and people like me are answering and still follow with the same question, then I have to think you don't want to read. That's all no hard feelings at all.
Good luck with the model.

I didn't know that the HL wheels were undersized, I thought the Mato wheels were oversized. I've checked tons of photos
and the wheel size and spacing look much better on the HL than on the Mato. The Mato metal wheel sets (bogies) look
far better than the Mato plastic bogies in my opinion. Just my 2 cents worth.

The reason I ask about the HL sherman is that it'll fit the regular ratio steel gearboxes from Taigen... so I naturally assumed the lower chassis was wider internally. You need stubby motors to fit them into the Mato chassis.
I'm a sucker for the lines of an M4A1

hi does nick's easy eight conversion kit include openning gatches for the turret and does it support recoilling unit also does the t23 just mounts on the tamiya upper hull like the stock 105 turret or is additional modification needed

Yes to the hatches opening, no to the recoil mount - You'll have to fab it up yourself. Both RichJohnson and myself have posted about our respective approaches. The T23 is a direct replacement for the Tamiya turret.
The Upper hull from the M51 would be the best choice - its identical externally to that of the M4 105, but allows for the larger turret ring gear needed to clear the recoil mechanism included in the M51 kit.
(of course neither hull is accurate for a 76mm Sherman as built, but that a separate discussion)
