Default MG 34 ammo belt

I thought this may have been discussed before but,I could not find it.
I spent hours looking to see if anyone makes an ammo belt for the MG 34. Just wanted to get as much detail on the tank as possible
I can find it in 1/6 and 1/35 but no 1/16. I thought that maybe I could sew one using canvas, any ideas on where I should look?

This is probably close enough.

Welcome to the nightmare of 1/16 detailing.

Bottom line is, unless Trumpeter or Tamiya includes an appropriate sprue with their kits, you're at the mercy of the few after marketers that deal in 1/16 and a MG belt is particularly tough. PE belts look convincing in 1/35, but in 1/16 you can see they're not rounded and it's small to go with indy brass rounds like 1/6 has.

My best recommendation is Tamiya makes MG42 gunner and carrier figure kits, you may have to drop $15 or so to get one, but you'll also end up with some extra stowage like mess kits, helmets and gas masks. If you gently heat up the styrene, you can form it to shape.

I haven't looked at that kit in a whilel, but I'm sure you can find a review online which typical have sprue shots. I would think they are separate pieces otherwise why make a model kit in the first place?

1/16 figure producers like Jeff Shui have detactable belts, but then you're in the $50 plus arena.

I'm thinking I might try my hand at making my own ammo belt out of canvas. I saw a few old WWII picks that kind of looked like canvas, with the 1/16 7.62 rounds from mitosal might work

The MG3 rounds from Axles are 7.62mm as opposed to the original MG42’s 7.92mm or they are as close as you will get and being made from brass will only require the centre painting black to look right also being brass they will be far tougher than plastic.
Dragon figures makes around 20 figures in 1/16 of these I think 4 have an MG42 with exceptional detail they also come with a 50 round ammo belt that can be shaped to the desired position, as for canvas belted ammunition this would suit Russian troops

I just bought a dragon kit at the LHS, and it came with said MG42 sprue. Hope these help. I've also heard about using the edge of a tea bag for the empty canvas belt. If you want to know more I'll go into that more, but I know there's a post about it, and Commander Bob knows way more about that than I do.

That's the 3rd dragon figure I've picked up (it was $21.99 + tax), this is the first and the third is a cavalryman w/horse (cool) so that one will take a bit.

Mitosal.com sells turned brass rounds and empty casings, for both Allies(.30 and .50 cal) and German (7.62mm).
Look under any of the German tanks, and you will find them at the bottom.
I used the .50 cal on my Pershing, including the spent rounds.
In case you were wondering, I used electrical tape for the belt, which I would not recommend.
They are very shiny, so I dulled them a bit.

Hey Dave, is that the .50 that comes with the Tamiya kit? Very, very cool. Obi Wan has taught you well.

What did you use for netting? Also very impressive. Are you by chance registered at finescale.com?

This is the Verlinden kit, obviously in progress, and the closed can atop the T1 (not really that color, not sure what went wrong, but it almost looks purple in this photo, and it's grey before wash)

But you should try to haggle with Curtis a bit, depending on what kind of deal he'll give you for shipping.

Edit: for some reason when I post photos they work REALLY good on zoom on my computer. Could a couple of you fellas try zooming on these photos and see if you get better than average zoom effect, please? I've seen other posts where I couldn't zoom so close and clear as I can on these photos. When I zoom on the belt it goes in really close and clear.

I have a belt for a 1/10 scale MG 34 / 42 that in itself may not be of help but the idea may.

It was offered years ago by Franz Pracht- never saw anyone else do it.

It appears to be small electrical contact pins either sewn together to for a belt or perhaps they were made that way to feed into a automated machine used on an assembly line??

Either way they looked pretty good to me. I have an original MG 34/42 'Gurt' and while the 1/10 scale version doesn't really compare
it's pretty decent and at the time( and remains so ) the only show in town. The pins don't fully simulae the 8mm spitzer bullet but I can
live with that.

It's at least worth the idea; perhaps there's a smaller version of the pin ( or this size good for a 1/16.50 cal browning ) for a .30
cal Browning or .303 Vickers.

Jerry

maxu52 - yes that is the Tamiya .50.
The netting I got from http://build-a-rama.com/, which is actually 1/18 scale stuff.
The netting looks better/more realistic rolled up than it does open.
I used cotton cheese cloth on my Panther, which I think looks better.

I tried the zoom, and yes it gets big, but loses some clarity.

Thanks, Dave. I tried the zoom on the photo you just posted and that works great, too. What a cool feature. That's great work on the Panther, and the zoom really shows it off.

Hi Rex
Yes, I picked up a set of the Live Resin 1/16th 50 Cal boxes & ammo belts, they really look nice, but haven't as yet mounted them on my AFV's. I'd like to know how to make the belts flex, haven't used resin stuff before, have tried looking for a tutorial on it, but no success. One thing about the ammo boxes they're the WWII pattern, whereas I'd prefer the newer version - came out mid 50's - i think - have a real 50 Cal ammo box with stencils on it indicating it was loaded in 1958. Hopefully Live Resin will bring those out too. If you're interested, Live Resin has an ongoing thread at armorama - http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?...age=52#1913916 -
