Does my heart good to see someone else with a keyboard almost as worn and dusty as mine.

And looks like you won't be getting your mantle this weekend sorry! Derek has family issues and won't be attending battle day... What else have you got planned to change on it to make it an early G?

The debris guard should be removed as well. Don't install the rain guard too for the early G.

That's not dusty, it's over-spray!

Depends on how early - Peipers Panthers had the rounded mantlet and no flame suppressors on the exhausts, but still had the rain guard and crew heater.

BTW Greg, is that offer of making up some vinyl stencils for me still open? I finally settled on which tanks I want to do and just started on priming them this afternoon...

Late Panthers were also built with the early rounded/non-chinned mantlet when the late mantlets ran out. It's only a matter of reference to eliminate the "Debris Guard" (the sheet of metal placed over the gap between the mantlet and the turret) for a truly 'early look'.

The "Rain Guard" was placed over the drivers periscope on later G's. Not to be confused with the Debris Guard.

That guard also appears on at least some of Peipers tanks - tho judging from a couple of pictures of 202, it looks like something the locals ripped off soon after the battle along with the rest of the loose sheet metal, so its hard to say how many had them...

I can see maybe a Panther F prototype using the existing Panther G, otherwise a complete new lower hull would be needed.

NO ONE will EVER get a true Panther II correct.

Pretty sure you would need the steel wheels too. Since the F was a prototype (some say it served but idk) I'm sure the Panther G hull would work fine. Dang, now I want another Panther....

Some of the late Panther G's had the steel road wheels.

I just happen to have an Imex Panther G, and I'd be happy to test out some steel roadwheels for ya, you know, just to make sure they work right and all. Go ahead and send a set up here.

If I recall correctly, the steel wheels were the same wheels as those used by the King Tiger. IMEX is already selling one of those...with metal road wheels, I think.

What approximate period are you aiming for Greg? Normandy, Battle of the Bulge or Late war?

okay...

For the G you can keep the existing HL ones if you are not fussed about accuracy.

If you want to be a little more fussy then you should take the 2 big pipes off of a Pantiger exhaust (or make your own - I'm lazy and had a few laying around), cut the HL pipes off from the boxes, and glue the pantiger ones in their place. You'll then need a thin sheet metal cover over the pipe (which hides what is left of the Pantigers jack bracket).

Should look something like this:
http://www.worldwarphotos.info/galle...france-1944-2/

I'll post pictures of mine tonight...
