Default Home Built Project Futre Tank Concept

Hello this is Jim and I am new to RC tanks . I was bit hard by the tank bug about 6 months ago and I have since bought several . Heng Long Bulldog was my first , Heng Long Leopard 2A6 was next. Then I wanted something with better Build quality to start with and I bought a Torro KV-2 . I then thought that I wanted to build something you could not buy. So here is what I am working on and I thought that someone may enjoy the build process I am going through , thanks for looking . Jim

Nice work, but I am not sure what tank it is you are building. Care to share some light on this.

Thanks For the Compliment .It is a concept of a future tank straight out of my head, I did not try to model if after anything . I am using a Sabertooth 12a Dual Motor controller now and stock steel gear from Heng Long. The tracks and drive wheels are from a leopard 2A6. The road wheels are from a M26 Pershing. The Chassis and Upper Hull are custom built hand welded . I ordered a Abrams M1A2 Clark tk22 Board for the sound and turret controls but I don't like the motor controls of any of the tank systems I have found yet. They seem to be very jerky and not silky smooth like the Sabertooth. I have added LED headlights and tail lights but I don't have those pictures yet. I will add more pictures as I go on the build. Thanks for looking , Jim

I like the way you think and what you are building. I'm going to keep an eye on your project and what you have in your spare parts boxes.

Great looking build. I always love looking in the background of pics people post. Do you butter your strawberry shortcakes? Also, the propane tank in the middle of a carpeted room has me scratching my head.

The propane tank is for a heater. I am in Michigan. And this is my basement. And I put nothing on my strawberry shortcakes. I will have some more pictures soon. And some more hidden background mystery.

Ha Ha. Right on. Thanks for the build pics, looks like an interesting project you have going. Nice work on the metal lower hull.

I am near Kalamazoo. The upper is metal also. The turret is going to be plastic. I am going to modify one to make it look correct. Thanks

Put some paint on the wheels and lower last night hope to get the painting done all but the turret tonight . The turret is proving to be tricky many layers of putty and sanding to get the clean shape I am looking for. More pictures in the next couple of days . I hope to have it all done by the end of this weekend. I bought a Spektrum DX5e radio for it and I does not come with dual centering sticks does anyone know how or where I can get a kit for it. Also the Clark board should be here with the radio by the end of the week . Thanks for looking Jim

Work moving slow when doing a bunch of final fitting. Finding small stuff I did not have and had to find. I realized that I need a 8 pin connector socket for the turret to plug in to . I found the 8 pin wire for sale and I have found a 8 way plug, but it does not look like the one I need for the airsoft. I need one with the 8 way plug on one side and a 3 plug set on the other. I have one in my leopard but I don't want to steal it. and even if I did I would still need another one to replace it anyway. every place I look for parts for sale does not seem to have the correct socket I need. Any ideas on where I can find one? I am using a heng long airsoft leopard 2 as my turret so I need the correct socket for that, thanks Jim

I've got a whole bunch of 8 pin connectors, both male and female. PM me and I'll send you couple. From the D to Kzoo should only take a day or two. If you have photos of what you need it will be a big help.

I decided to just go with just the Clark board for now for controls and other functions , for now I am using a Spy micro speed controller for turret rotation. I still want to do some sort of urban camo pattern in spots on the tank but it is coming along nice. This is a picture of the 8 way plug I need to be able to get my gun elevation and airsoft gun working , thanks Jim

You need just the 8 pin and not the whole board, correct? That's just an 8 pin male JST plug and I can send one. If you need the whole board I can send the two 3 pin males and the single 2 pin male as well but you'll have to use them as separate leads or get a breadboard. It's always seemed kind of backwards to me that those are male pins and the ones that plug into them are female, but then I started looking at how the little steel pins themselves are kind of phallic and they plug into the receptacle in the female pin. I had a hard time getting used to that until I started trying to imagine the pins without the plastic around the edge of the male and then it made more sense.

Anyway ... just let me know if you need just the 8 pin or the others as well. Have you soldered one of these yet? If you have, you already know that you have to be fairly quick so you don't melt the plastic. I always tin the wire and the pin first so I can get a quick connection without getting a cold solder.

Just the other day Rich sent me some ammo cans for my halftrack and didn't charge me a dime so I'll consider this paying it forward (but if I can make a decent tent I'll still send you one, Rich), and you won't have any cost, Jim. Thanks again, Rich, I know what I'll be working on this weekend.

I got the PM so I know where to send it (or them).

OK, like I said, I don't have the board itself, but I'll send all the JST plugs that you need and you'll be able to connect them one by one and then tie them together with a zip tie. It will do the same job, it will just have a total of four leads (one 2 pin, two 3 pin and one 8 pin).

Wait!! New Idea!! What if you buy one of these for under ten bucks?
