Default Andrews Design Sd.Kfz 2 Kettenkrad 1:16 x 2

In January 2014. I found on the ebay an interesting model - Sd.Kfz.2 Kettenkrad 1:16. It was selling as non r/c model and I won the bidding on it! It time that it came to me, I found some info on the I-net about this model and I found out, that it is possible to make it r/c!
When model arrives, it turned out that there's no motor and gearbox in it... I wrote to the xion.de and got the answeer, that theese parts will be awailable only after aprox 6-8 months...
But then I found on the ebay another kettenkrad. It was partly built and it cames with all necessary electronics, battery, charger and driver figure!
And here comes some photos:

Small uprgade of the Kettenkrad:

The work on the Sd.Kfz. 2 was still going on. As the steering of this model was terrible - it didn't steers on the sand or the grass at all, on the internet was found good solution. It was necessary to take out the genuine gearbox with one motor and replace it with custom gearbox with two motors. But there was small problem with control unit, that allows to manage both motors in the same tame with steering servo. On the German webpage rc-panzerketten-forum.com I found info about control unit, specially made for halftracked vehicles:

The custom gearbox was made in two evenings:

I took my Ketten outside for a walk:

Starting for my second Kettenkrad:

One evening I worked aprox 3 hours and made this thing:

This is what I was trying to make:

There it is mounted on the Kettenkrad:

The hardest work was to made the cable drums:

The next step will be the painting...

Totally amazed. One of my fave German WW2 vehicles. Saw a real one, restored on-line recently for 135k. Didn't know they made 1/16 models of this. Are these kits still available to buy, and if so, where?

I recently, at an antique shop, found a NOS 1/72 scale model of this. Was made in 1974, some company out of Hong Kong. Even the plastic bag containing the parts had never been opened. Have instructions, decals, everything that came with it. Never going to build it, figure it's worth more keeping it NOS for the future.

You did great work. Love your video

Most excellent!!! Great job on a great and unique WW2 German vehicle. Would love to own a real one, but they seem to be in the 125-150K, and in short supply.

Hi EddyK

Thanks for posting your two builds.

Would it be possible for you to give a link to the German source of the electronics that you used for the half track drive? Also the motors/gear box specs that you used for your builds?

Thanks
George

Hi, gentlemen!
In long, dark winter evenings I decided to rebuild a little bit my first kettenkrad. I replaced gearboxes with plastic gears to another new one with metal gears.

And make some detailing, too...

In theese models weren't made exaust muffler, so I scratch built them for both kettenkrads:

And now it's gone for the repainting...

As mentioned earlier, it would be great to get a link to the site that had the Half Track electronics. I have two 21st Century German half tracks that I would like to RC. I have read that the steering on those that have been RC'd hasn't been that good. Seems the perfect answer to tie the steering into the tracks as well. great modeling and thanks for sharing. I would love to see some of your other projects. Any further projects I hope you'll think f doing a build thread.

Absolutely amazing work. Let us know if you ever think of getting into selling those gearboxes for the conversion.

Hi, Jim!
Sorry for the late answer! You can find electronics at sgs-electronic.de
I just bought board TVC-TRF05 HT7 for Sd.Kfz 250, but it'll be ok for 251, too.
It has sound, light, gun, MG etc functions.

I bought the kit years ago so it's been sitting in my closet collecting dust. If I ever get into it you'll be the first to know on those gearboxes!

Great attention and execution of detail. Love your work.

I ended up fusing some of the stock gears on mine to increase the speed, but love the idea of two motor/gearbox for steering since the wheels only works well in reverse or on flat surfaces.

Hello
Thanks for posting your build, it is inspiring. Would you be willing to give us technical information of your motor gear box from your post #12?

I think I could make the same type if I knew: 1. the DC motor gears and their ratio 2. The size of the brass gears 3. The size of the aluminum bracket and the bearings used in it.

Please let us know if you can help with that information.

Thanks
George

The Kettenkrads look just great, Eddy, but what really interested me is the truck in the background in the first set of photos. Can you please tell me more about that? Brand, where you got it, etc? Is it static or RC? Doesn't matter if it's static, it still interests me very, very much and I'd really appreciate all the info you can supply.

It's a static 1/18 model from Indiana Jones series.
You can find it on the eBay, but they are rare:

Just picked up one of those trucks, Eddy. They're not that rare, just expensive! But ... wait for it ... I got a used one for $29 USD!! Score!! Should be here in a few days. Thanks again for the info, Eddy, the truck will look great in the village this summer.

And while I was there I also scored a Caterpillar tractor in 1/16 that will also be great for the farm. I'll post pix when they get here.
