Default BergerPanzer III Build

well, i finally got started on the BergerPanzer III build, this is planned to be utilized in the Rolling Thunder battles at Danville. The hull is a Heng Long Panzer III as the base for this conversion, it will have Tamiya electronics and will mount the TBU. It has the Impact winterketten tracks as well as metal adjustable idler wheels.
the box on top is made of balsa wood and stained. eventually it will all be painted. I still have to mount the crane and some other details but my goal is to have it complete by April.

Looking good Will. You gonna throw some winch's in there for drag and boom lines?

It will be like the original which just had a crane on it with simple pulleys to lift engines and what not, but it will get made, nothing RC powered though. Making the pulleys will be a challenge.

Think I used something like this for my wrecker boom. May be a tad big, but if you don't feel like scratching them would be a big time saver.

ahhhhhhhhh, that looks like it might work!

there are some detail issues, the upper box should extend past the hull, and the angled beams are a tad out of scale, but i am going to make it as close as i can.

THIS is cool work!

How does a BergerPanzer fit in a battle scenario and used as an offensive weapon?

Not used for offense, but to repair tanks that have been killed in the battle. It can take the place of a truck to repair a tank without hauling it off the field.

I like that a lot. Put a scale dude in there with a panzerfaust or panzersheck (sp) on a servo swivel and... "Lets go fix tanks!"

I think that it might also be used as a supply vehicle for Rolling thunder, or even as a de-mining vehicle. With the ability for it to take hits, it will require the team to protect it, adding another level of difficulty to the match.

Okay, I see.

So... protect it as it's allowed to take hits while recovering vehicles to be rebuilt so they can return to the battlefield? That would be an interesting scenario... tanks returning, actually NOT destroyed but IF recovered can return to action.

As a supply vehicle. How would that play out as you do not run out of ammo in an IR playing field.

(just thinking out loud here guys)

Logistical vehicles can be captured and the capturing team then gets it's recoveries. Also the other team no longer has the use of it so no recoveries, fueling of zones, mine clearing, or bridge repair. Your essentially stuck in the zones you've occupied and thats it. Also logistical vehicles can't shoot back thus far in RT scenarios.

Only A.C.E hosted events run the RT campaigns as of now. We've put alot of time into thinking this stuff up to increase the stress on the operators to make it a more realistic combat experience and more emphasis on team work and less "button mashing" team deathmatch. It's an ongoing monster that keeps getting upgraded as new variables/ideas are presented every time we run it. Lots of fun!!

Sorry for the left turn on this thread Will. (Good questions from Jeff though.) If anyone has any other questions on RT feel free to start a thread, PM me or check out our club website.

I'm sure Will won't mind if his build created a conversation that stayed on the subject and wasn't high jacked. Some questions just are not answered unless stimulated by something eye opening like this really cool build

I am really interested as I have a couple PIII, PIV chassis that now have no plans for.

Nah, this is good, we are still talking about the BP III and its potential uses. I was able to get a little bit more done today and i think its coming along fairly well, we'll see how the jib / boom crane comes along!

I still have some more details to add on the rear rack, i hope to have that done tomorrow and start on the crane.

Ive been thinking about a Sherman recovery tank. That would be really cool for our battles to keep the allies going since we always get creamed by the overwhelming number of german modeling popularity. IBU makes a repair option on the IBU2 but it wouldn't even have to be used that way, just drive up and wait a couple minutes and tank is back in the battle.

Yup, we use time as a variable alot in the RT campaigns. For recoveries we have the luxury of having r/c trucks and trailers, but if your hit by arty you drive back to your starting point and wait 2min then good to drive back into the engagement. Also minefields, fueling zones, bridge repair, all done by time (2min.)

Doesn't the IBU have a repair option?

I thought Mario had video of it, where a Bergepanzer (no extra 'r') could get within a certain proximity of a tank and remove accumulated damage, but it took time to do, neither could move and both were susceptible to hits during the process. I seem to remember that there was also a structure that a tank could pull into and repair hits.

Believe your right Jeff. Only thing is the receiving unit may have to be an IBU as well? Not sure. As with all these systems that include these cool features, implementation with a big crowd just isn't going to happen.

The IBU is not the only system to have a recovery feature to it. The Mako 2 battle system for RC tanks Australia also has a recovery function and what makes it in one way different from the IBU is that the mako 2 board can be plugged into Tamiya tanks as well as heng long and taigen brand tanks. Yet another feature that makes the Mako board a possibility is that it has a semi low price point of only $50. The Mako has worked well at LA tank as Richard has seen in some of the tanks there so he could also possibly add his own imput from how he has seen the Mako function. More information about the Mako can be found here: http://rctanksaustralia.com/shop/ind...roducts_id=217

Yea, the packages from RCTKAU are pretty awesome, but like I said no way to get 20-30+ tankers using the same system at one time. To me this is why the tammy system is still the standard, buld a kit, add a battle system that is plug and play and your on our way, no soldering, jumpers, brown-outs, etc. My opinions are only on bigger numbers cause my main play ground is the Danville battlefield when it comes to IR battling. I occasionally have some folks over to my backyard battlefield in which these systems are great to mess with and R&D but even then with only 4-10 tankers not eveyone is going to have the same electronics even at a low price point. All this being said I absolutely CANNOT believe how this hobby has expanded in the past 3yrs in a very good way. Wasn't too long ago when it was Tamiya, pay $$ and time to convert a HL and that was it with a few boutique tank exceptions and they were just essentially static models that were motorized.
