i like the fact that you can load them with 540 motors. All the grunt you could ever want or need.

What size motors do they come with and do I need to add power leads to them?

Yes you need to add the leads to them. Mine came with 480's.

Joey, Thanks for the conformation on motors and leads. 480's will be fine. Just wanted to be sure I didn't have to pull the 380's out of the Tamiya gear boxes. I want a set for my Tamiya King Tiger. Do they come with a mounting plate or do I just use the Tamiya post mounts?

They come with motors, so nothing to worry about there. These things are mounted differently, depending on the tank they go into. The King tiger, for instance, requires drilling 2 new holes in the lower hull for mounting them. This is easy to do and all you need is a 3mm bit...if memory serves.
I know that in some cases they are direct bolt in, like the Sherman.
Bob spend a lot of time getting these things sorted so that the motors are the correct rpm units, gearing is also correct. This is all done so that the tanks will have scale speed and also have torque to keep moving even at 8 hits. It works. I am sure you will love them....only trouble is after buying them, you will want them in all the tanks.

You are correct, I fear that once I get a set for the Tiger II, then the Panther and the Tiger I will need a set!!! I do not mind drilling two extra holes in the lower hull of the Tiger II. I really want a bullet proof set of gear boxes for the Tiger II. I have metal tracks so the torque is important to be able to creep at scale speed.

Maus45, with these units you will be able to creep through ankle deep red clay mud if you desire with no problems. The two extra holes are easy to locate, it is explained in the instructions with photos. I do recommend that you have extra track links on hand. The units are so strong that unlike in years past where if you ingested a stone or other obstruction in your track system you would chew up expensive gears, with my system you will break a track link. Been there done that.

Thanks Robert, sounds good. I may need to add the Darryl idler upgrade to my Tiger II?

Question for Joe, or Bob. What is the smallest actual dimensional size of the smallest version of these TU's? i have a project in the works but side by side space is very limited. Not much more than 3.5 inches. Is there a version that would fit in this spacing in the normal side by side configuration?

Greg, I would say no. The dimensions are the same I think, it is the outdrive length and basic config that differs.

The Sherman system is 3.475 inches side to side including mounts. The screws for the Sherm are countersunk in to the mount and the mounts and main frame will have to be massaged to get the screws flush with the mounts. This can be done with not much trouble.

Bob I am running the gear box braces that you sell in my tanks. Will I be able to continue to use the gear box brace or does it need to be removed.

Yes, the brace will have to be removed but on the other hand you won't need it, the new transmission braces the hull just as well, being one piece.

i have just installed in my Tiger I the new gearboxes from ETO and they are awesome. The install was not difficult at all and they are immensely quiet and strong (thinking about running my metal tracks now!). So much better than any option out there! I can't wait to drive at Danville now!

You said it man. These things are the best thing for the tanks to upgrade. Simply flawless.

How has the speed of your tank changed?

Thanks Bob. I may have to re-examine this chassis i am working on. I mat just be able to squeeze 3.475 boxes in there.

Speed seems to be spot on, i haven't timed it, but judging by the ol' Mark 1 Mod 1 eyeball, I can't tell a difference.

The T1 is fast out of the box. Are you coming to Danville in March? We can speed test it then. Nothing a lil trim probably can't fix if its fast.

He should be pretty close to scale on road speed but let me know when he gets to Dville. I don't have an electronic speed test here. Speaking of which, how is one of those built as far as electronics?

It's just a math equation of time and distance. We use a stop watch and you drive at full speed to a line which starts the time and finish at 25'.

First tests with Tiger 1 and Tiger 2 showed speeds of roughly 40 KPH, done in spring last year. I always calculate cross country speeds at a max of 20 KPH and that is generally optimistic. One can not go bucketing across the countryside without intimate knowledge of the local area.

Strongly considering these gear boxes as I stripped my Panter Tamiya gears this pass weekend. I see this post is a few years old and want to see how these gears are holding up 3 years later ? Any issues to know about ?
