Default Taking the plunge ...

Taking the plunge after all this time...

LiPo batteries

I charged these two using a Graupner Polaron. I had them charging on ( in? ) a firebrick enclosure on my bench while
I was working on other tasks. I'm going to keep a weather eye on these things. I will use them in my IBU2 fleet as it will help
keep watch as I use them. I will do my best to maintain them as per the specifications as I understand they need to be.
With anything other than an IBU I will use a low voltage alarm in the balance plug.

I just could no longer resist the siren song of the power and other benefits of these things...

Haven't decided if I'll keep them in a .30 cal ammo can yet.

I'm not really that nervous with them; I've just developed a healthy respect for something that can go as badly as these can.
Any battery this small that give a 200 amp burst like these little monsters can has my respect...

Yes, always a good idea to keep an eye on these suckers Jerry. I use .50 cal ammo cans with a 1" hole drilled in the lid for venting.

I've used lipo's for over three years now and have never had a problem. I buy good lipo's like the Venom you've shown. I also store them in my tanks but they are unplugged. I charge them in a lipo bag.

I've used them for almost 10years now in all kinds of rc vehicles as long as you dont over discharge them they are fine. I can tell when to stop driving by the sudden drop in power. as long as you dont keep going the battery will be fine. I've only had one catch on fire and that was because i shot it with a pellet gun after one of the wires rotted off.

Jerry, I know the IBU has lipo protection, but I still use an LVA. Just paranoid, I guess, but I really do think you're better safe than sorry. LVAs are cheap, and great insurance.

From what i understand of them the biggest danger with lipo's is during charging (aside from bad damage). Get a very good charger, make sure that is has storage mode. I store mine in a lipo safe and charge them in it as well. Usually as a precaution i will put my lipo safe on the stove or in the oven if i leave the house lol i figure if a fire happens that is probably the safest place for it. Wish i had a wood stove. Thats about the only thing i can think of that would be safer inside the house (i don't have a garage). Also with the LVA, a lot of those can be programmed to cut off a little early that way you don't have to strain to listen for the alarm, unless its a plane then an alarm is a better choice then becoming a sudden flying brick. Just food for thought!

I have several chargers that are LiPo capable but the one I have begun to use for these is the Graupner Polaron.

I bought a pile o' LiPo low voltage alarms from HK - I don't see how even in the heat of battle you can ignore that
nerve shattering, dead raising, ear piercing, soul rendering shriek those things emit...

That said... I happened to catch an episode of the new season's Battlebots ( ABC )- rather a preseason intro. I noticed far more smoldering and in a few cases fire emitting ( not the on- demand kind of fire! ) when bots were damaged. I chalked this up to the prevalence of powerful LiPo packs damaged in combat...

So be careful of those LiPos in ur models boys and girls or else it might be a case of 'Po little model - I knew it well Horatio...
