Tamiya literally just released a 1/35 scale mark 1 british ww1 tank that runs off of a motor in a straight line. Its probably easy to make it rc. I am working on the first american produced tank and official american tank of the army

Update: I am nearly done with the entirety of the hull of the tank, which i am testing if my dimensions are correct by making it out of cardstock. So far it has come together well. Of course since it is made of cardstock, it doesnt seem particularly even but that is what happens when a precise machine isnt used. I have located a metal cutting company in my area and will be visiting them this weekend to get a quote on the cost for these plates. They will be able to use much more precision than i ever would.

Update: sorry i have not been doing these more frequently. As of now im focusing a ton on the hull construction. I hit a wall as to where i will get a accurate part measured for the running gear and decided i would get the takom 1/16 ft17 for reference on running gear. I WILL NOT CANNABALIZE THE MODEL!! I will merely be measuring some of the parts for assistance, but will be keeping to my plate measurements that i have made as the m1917 was not an exact copy. I also needed the model to solve another issue. Tracks. I wanted to make ones that are true to the m1917 as i can not find any substitutes that match the real things. The plastic tracks of the takom model will be extremely helpful in the development of the tracks for my model. I may turn the ft17 model into a rc tank for a future project.

My Takom ft17 arrived today!! So far the kit looks amazing! I placed the tank i made out of cardstock over the base of the takom tank it is 100% the same! I am so satisfied with that. I have been investigating into how i will make the metal tracks, and I have looked into potentially forging them, then drilling holes for the track pins. If anyone has any ideas for how i can potentially make the metal tracks, i would love to hear them! Now that I have this model, i will be able to measure or even have someone make metal replicas of the running gear. I might have to forge that myself along with metal idler wheels.

Thought about the bruder stuff? It's plastic but could save a bunch of time.

Or the more expensive route as you'd probably need 2 or 3 vehicles to get the track length.

Hello guys,
So first. If you had not seen another thread I had started, It was following my desperate look for new blueprints for my tank, as the past ones were horrific and caused me to mess up my measurements, so i have to start from scratch. Before I had realized my error, I had ordered the book "Ft-17/m1917 walkaround" by David Doyle. I was at a crossroads. Use some mysterious russian blueprints that appear to say they are of the m1917, yet are very high resolution, make a slightly innacurate conversion of ft17 to m1917, which would drive me nuts over the accuracy. I had decided initially on using the russian blueprints, and blew them up each view of the blueprints on seperate pieces of paper, as seen below:
These two above photos are my previous plan.
Then the saving grace arrived when my book came in the mail today...
I found in this book extremely accurate dimensional measurements of the m1917!!
and i found this beautiful page... WHICH IS BETTER THAN SKETCHY RUSSIAN BLUEPRINT!!
My new plan is now that I will photocopy this page at a local photo shop. Then i will have them increase the image size to that of the 1/16 tank. Then I can get them to print out these blueprints from the book in the 1/16 scale and life will be a lot easier for me. I wont even have to copy from an unknown scale to 1/16 scale, and will just have to simply measure the 1/16 scale image and can directly make the parts from it.
Additional question:
Would this gearbox work well for a tank? it will fit within the tank, but I'm curious as to whether I will be able to hook it up to a controller where it will be able to drive it like you do on normal rc tanks, will it hook up to the motherboards I will need for the tank?
https://www.walmart.com/ip/70168-Dou...=1086490668190
What motherboards would you guys suggest for the tank that are smaller, what electronics would you suggest for turret? Any advice would be valued!
See you all later!
Ben

Those were the line drawings I was speaking of from the book in the other thread. I didn't suggest them because you wanted blueprints, but if they work for you... cool!
I used the Tamiya box https://www.tamiyausa.com/product/it...oduct-id=70097 (and so have a few others) 70097. It has a 3 position axle setting and is rated for the type of electronics we use. I picked one up from eBay very inexpensively.

Ok so an update: turns out the "drawings from the book sucked. Incredibly uneven at parts, lines overlapped where they shouldnt and more. So the sketchy russian prints it is! I figured out the amount i would need for each view blown up in 1/16 scale and will visit a photo shop this weekend to get them printed out! Then we can finally get some progress going. When im not in school, im reading up on the tanks suspension system and how i can replicate it in realistic terms, for example: debating how to attack the front of the suspension to the hull, and keep it even on both sides. Will detail planes more in depth later. I am also purchased gearbox 70097 at the advice of panther f and it is on the way so ty jeff for the help!
In regards to other electronics, i am trying to gage what i will need, as i know that i will need servos for turret rotation, gun elevation, etc., but im clueless as to what are the most recommended. If u guys can tell me some electronics you suggest, please let me know, like a good smoke machine, mother board, servo for turret, and so on? Any help is greatly appreciated and im sorry if im asking too much, i just am not experienced in that area...
Thanks!
Ben

These are the mini servo I use. There is a continous and standard versions.
http://www.robotshop.com/en/9g-conti...cro-servo.html
For mother boards your options are clark22 or 60, asp, IBU2 or 3, or elmod.
space looks to be a premium and i think the clark is the smallest, its quite compact.
Dont know about the asp, but the others support servo drive for gun recoil if its important to you.

These are the dimensions of the TK22 from the Clark Site (60mm X 50mm X 20mm).

Hey Guys, Im doing an update on whats been going on. I went to a local fed ex and got the picture blown up to 1/16 scale, and have finally been able to get to correcting all my measurements from the last mess up. Surprisingly, my original measurements were not too far off of these correct ones, usually by only a mm, but i digress. It was awkward at the store, kinda, as I had thought i figured out the correct magnification at the store, but got it corrected in about five minutes so it was no big deal, so there was the employee printing off these blueprints, and they were the wrong magnification. 2 tries later and we had the right one, thank god he was a nice guy and was patient with me! I have a photo of the 1/16 scale blueprints next to a penny below so you guys can see how big this tank will be.
I then proceeded to correct the measurements as you can see me making the adjustments below on the old drawings...
I have assembled the wonderful gearbox, thanks again Jeff for help with picking it out, and it works very smoothly. I set it to the highest ratio, which i think is about 1:250, so the tank will have an accurate speed...
Below you guys can see where this gearbox will be positioned in the tank...
I have been looking into the clark boards at the advice of Maus and RichJohnson, ty both, and have decided that the clark looks pretty good, and doesn't look like it will be too painful for my wallet. I also really like the look of the servos, as they come at a nice price, so i will definitely be utilizing some of those for turret rotaion, and possibly gun elevation if it can fit. If not i can 3d print some nice housings for modified servo casings at my school, cause they never use it.
Thats all for today!
Later,
Ben

Hey man, nice project. Not sure if you can find anything useful or not, but I put together a Takom FT a couple years back. Here's a link to the build: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-t...6th-build.html
I'm not as skilled as most and my attention to detail only goes so far since what I'm after is a working model in the end that looks ok from about 10 feet away. The experience I've had so far with the Takom at least is the tracks are somewhat weak and tend to lock up/jam when dirt and rocks get into them. Also, I recommend the use of a Clark TK35 as they're small than the 22 since space is really at a minimum in such a small hull.

Hiya guys, been busy but have been making lots of progress and im nearly done measuring out the plates. My only question is what remote controllers do you guys suggest and what should i use for the smoke gun elevation? I found the tk37 clark board to be good, but what continuous servo would work with it and what would i use for gun elevation that works with tk37?
Thanks for help,
Ben
