I had a 9x and did the updates etc and then I bricked it and bought a 9xr and updated to ER9x.
I just dropped the 9X module into it and used to fly for a few years and bought a 9XRpro.
I put a AFHDS 2A module in and found it's also backward to the AFHDS so we're cooking with gas. Both protocols.
I bought the iRange Multi and am still screwing around but know that the module I mentioned is 100% OK with an original 9x module (AFHDS) and I've flown out to 3-400 metres with no issues.

The early Turnigy 9X radios were sold with a Turnigy brand module that operated under the old AFHDS protocol - HOWEVER, there is nothing stopping you from swapping out that module for a different one. I purchased my first 9X in 2011 and I still use it to this day and it remains my favorite radio. There has been no problem keeping it up-to-date.
There are several AFHDS options.
To be honest I'd seperate your old 9x for parts and get a 9xr or 9xr-pro.
I bought my 2 9xr-pros for about $30 each but wherever you are it's an insane radio for peanuts.

Thanks Bryce, I've added that receiver to the Wiki, and for others interested here is the receiver for sale at Banggood. It's cheap but drawbacks are that it requires minor soldering to use and is limited to only 6 channels. However you are correct, it does operate on the old AFHDS protocol so people with bone-stock 9X radios from years past can use it with the TCB.

I'm getting close to a complete strip down and reconfigure.
I'm using a Pershing with ...
* 18650 batteries in a replaceable cradle
* On board 2s battery charger and a DC connector
* Power distribution board normally used with quads
* on board power for FPV and Vtx
* Servo gun elevation
* Focused IR offence
* broad IR defense
* switching for Vtx via OP board
* I'm hoping to use a telmentry link for broadcast battle info.

in fact after playing for a bit I can see no reason I can't just mount a smartphone into the onboard.
I'll fiddle with that in the next few months.

Entry level smartphones are cheap, about $100, that's a hell of a lot of smarts for that coin.
It's all linux so it's just IO functions.
Our beautiful Open Panzer will LOVE any input.
Use the 'droid for AI.

I can see MAGIC.

Saw that and grabbed another. They're also selling the 9x w/IA8 receiver for around $55 (mode 2) and $33 (mode 1). The xcar 45A ESC's are $6 too. Pretty cheap to setup the OP right now.

I've been waiting for someone to do a 1/6th scale tank and I love the Pz II, so that will be a great one to watch. I think you are approaching me in the number of TCBs you own.

Default Led

Hello, I couldn't find it anywhere. Do anyone know what resistor is needed to install to work with OP and not burn stock Taigen/Heng Long LED used in lights and MG?

Stock Taigen/HengLong tanks should have resistors already installed in their LED wiring, usually near the LED end. If you see one, then you shouldn't need to add any more. If not, something in the range of 100 - 150 ohms should be adequate. If you have a multimeter, what you want to check is that current draw on the LED does not exceed about 20mA, and size the resistor appropriately.

The TCB appears to be back in stock in the USA warehouse. It doesn't look like they have any at the Global warehouse, and I can't see the other international ones. But hopefully this is an indication that stock will be returning to all areas soon. I've sent several emails to HK and they've never responded so I know only what I see on their website.

The Open Panzer is compatible with all known tank IR codes including Tamiya and Heng Long. All code and the embedded IR protocols are open source, you can browse it on GitHub.

Hi Luke,
I am having trouble getting an account on the OP forum board.
Everytime I try to register it says registration is disabled.
I have just got my OP board installed and running in my HL T-90, but have a few questions to ask over there.
Thanks,

Sorry about that, try again now. Sometimes the spam registrations get so numerous I disable it for a few days, but I've reopened it now.

Either Hobby King only had a few of them to sell or the TCB is selling well. They are out of stock again.

I noticed that myself. Just today I sent Hobby King my 7th email in two months, asking about the TCB's long term status. Not holding my breath for a response.

Here is an odd question for Open Panzer.

I have a Kyosho Blizzard 1/12 scale snow cat. It uses the same 7.2 v battery as our Tamiya 1/16th scale tanks and runs with a two motor / two gearbox set up like the heng long tanks. It uses 370 motors. The ESC has failed and it now only goes in circles. Would the Open Panzer be able to run the snow cat? If so, would be able to run sounds, lights, winches and such?

I have upgraded several tanks so the swap out seems easy. The main question is, will it work?
