Upcoming Battle Weekend in Danville
#27
It's where one disassembles the apple, cuts the tabs on the pyramid shaped mirror, move the mirror 45 degrees, and then reassemble. Practical effect is that all hit angles are now 45 degrees off the longitudinal and lateral axes of the tank.
Back in the early 2000s, we had a couple guys at the SCAT club who did that (without telling anyone) and of course, denied it. They didn't fare well. There were all sorts of gimmicks done to gain an advantage back then. I remember when lowering the apple in the hatch (and concealing the LEDs) was the rage, mounting the apple on the back end of the tank (lets you shoot from cover without exposing your apple and also greatly enhances a slope defense), sweep shots (where you pivot while shooting...taking advantage of the Tamiya battle unit's 1 second IR illumination...sprays the whole field with one shot...). This list is near endless.
At the LA club, we use IFA because it is clearly visible to all, and doesn't void the warranty. Yes, it requires suspension of reality, but so do many other things in IR battling.
The Danville club use TFA in different versions (sometimes only TD's use it, and sometimes everyone does). They all seem to like it.
