French AMX-13: A Cold War Hunter – The Model Kit
Since I was young the AMX-13 fascinated me with his oscillating turret, so this was one of my goals to design a 1/16 RC model kit.
Despite it was a lightweight tank with a thin armor, he was built in 7700 pcs. and was transferred to 25 Countries and is still in action in some armies.
Beginning of creating the model needs studying a lot of books, pictures and technical drawings. Some steps of the design process:

Ok, let´s start… but this (picture) report will be only roughly presented, not too much details.
Starting with the lower hull…
...using modified Panzer 3 bogies:
Easy build return rollers…
…and front bumpers.
Assembling of the wheels…
…and the idler:
Parts of the boxes, placed on top of the track covers:
At the backside of the lower hull:
…and some accessories at the front.

The idea of the T-92 was very similar to the AMX-13, but was never built...

Hi Freddy
Very nice. My father preferred the AMX13 to the M41's that the NZ Army had. Though he may have been a tad biased, having seen an Indian AMX squadron ambush Pakistani Pattons during the indo-Pakistani war in 1965 - he was a Observer with UNMOGIP (UN Military Observer Group India - Pakistan). I've heard the head space in the AMX is very restricted - suitable for crew 5ft 5in or less - assuming that is correct, he would have been too tall at 5ft 10 in.
The Singaporean army brought their AMX13's, as well as M113's, to NZ on exercise in the past, to train their crews in the wide open spaces of Waiouru. They still do that with their Artillery.
They also installed Simfire on the AMX - Solartron Simfire References - the model - 1/16 Simfire -

Special build track gears, using motor size 28mm.
Using 38t tracks from DKLM; they´re very similar to the original AMX-13 tracks without rubber pads. A lot of rework is necessary before these are usable …

Thanks Mal!
Yes, the gearboxes will be available too, but separated. It's too cramped in the front section; it wasn't possible to use a standard gear (HL, Mato,...).

Some progress to report...the turret.
Rotating part of the turret…
…and the oscillating part of the turret:
Mounted together…
…with an customized Panther gun…
…placed on top of the upper hull…
…and everything mounted together.
After applying of light grey primer, the details got more visible J.

That thing is great. Nice work.

Such a great choice to produce next! I like all of the AMX versions plus this will work with an M4 hull.

yes, but the Egyptians used an M4A4 hull fitted with an M4A2 engine with T51 tracks with 3 piece differential housing, quite a challenge for the scratch builder, no?

I´m glad you like my current project!
The AMX-13 fascinated me all the time, so this was a MUST on my list
Somebody asked me, if the turret will be available separately and that should be possible, if anybody want´s to do the conversion of the Egyptian army (the exact produced numbers are not known, but experts talking about 25 units).
Cheers,
Freddy
