Default 6-wheeled Sd.Kfz.231 – Beginning of Wehrmacht reconnaissance – the build report

Usually I’m designing tracked RC vehicles, but sometimes I switch over to other genres.

Since a very long time I wanted to have a 6-wheeld recce car Sd.Kfz.231 and after WPL/JJRC released their trucks, it was possible to use some parts of their chassis.

Here are some pictures out of the design phase.

Base is the chassis of the JJRC Q60 (WPL B16 isn’t possible to use because of its different rear axles).

Some parts of the kit:

Let’s start the build.

Preparations of the resin printed hull.

Reworking of the JJRC axles.

Tapping the axle’s end…

The original gear motor is too weak, so I’ve designed a stronger one.

...will be soon continued :-)

Cheers,
Freddy

Thorough and professional in every way, Fascinating to watch it develop. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys for your interest

Some progress and details at the lower hull…

…until the lower hull is finished.

Next step means the upper hull. An overview of the parts…

…and done so far

Saw this kit on the internet without the motor, electronics or axles and they wanted 565 euro for it. In my opinion that's a total rip off and the seller should be ashamed of himself. Hell, I've got a Sd.Kfz.250 tracked vehicle that came as a kit in 1/6 scale and I only paid $300 for it. There's a difference between making a fair profit and rippin' folks off and at more than $660 USD this is way into the rip-off category. I don't care how long it took to design, that's still less than $10 worth of plastic and should cost NO MORE than 200 euros. Just an opinion, but I think it's a valid one.

Less work at the turret is needed...

For easy moving, flange bearings are used.

The build is done so far…

After applying light grey primer and Tamiya TS4 the shape is much better visible….

Available will the kit be here:

Great work!

Great engineering job, how much time between designing, modifying, test printing, reprinting, sourcing parts (Motor, Gears, etc.) and hardware, modifying parts, final printing, assembly and final testing do you think you have invested in this project?
How much time for just the final printing of parts?
What resin printer do you use it looks like it can print fairly large projects?

That's a very well planned and executed build, this must have taken quite some time to design.
If you could buy x4 of the steering axles it would be possible to build an Sd.Kfz.232

Uh, a lot of questions

Thanks for your interest in this build!

All my designs are in corporation with friends, so designing and building (not manufacturing) the protoype is my task. This 6-wheeled armored car was printed from my friend Lukas of fertigungswerk16, so he knows much more of printing data or type.

Usually I need approx. 9 – 12 month for designing and building a kit with all improvements (time span for manufacturing included) to get it ready for production. In this case the Covid19 situation gave me much more time all day to invest so it needed about 4 month to get it ready with several test printings and design changes.

I guess for (re-)designing approx.. 300 - 400 hours was needed.

You've got it; the 8-wheeled armored car (Sd.Kfz. 232) will be next but all axles have to be rebuild for this armored car.

sounds good I would be interested to see the progress of the Sd.Kfz.232 when you get started on the project.
Excellent work.

Very cool project. I like your town as well. The little armored car slipped out of town, right under the nose of the T-34.
