Default Heng Long Tiger

I am thinking of doing a few cosmetic mods to the tank.

I know the commanders hatch is the wrong and needs to be rotated - which should be easy enough.
Main gun needs to be rotated - how easy is this to do?
Main gun should be lengthened - I assume best to get a ready lengthened one or extension insert.
What else should I be looking at putting right on the tank.

I know I will regret saying this but everything is still working fine, the only thing that has happened a couple of times is a drive wheel coming loose. Is the bad reputation for Heng Long tanks really deserved?

To flip the main you will need to drill out the mounting bracket for the air soft gun. I can post some pictures later seeing how I have my tank in piece for mods and painting. Here is a link to the mods that I'm doing

the drive wheel/gear coming loose is sort of common (to me anyways).
You need to pop-off the cover with "pointy object" and retighten the screw. The drivers side seems to work loose on my Tiger and Panther after a while.
Only seems to happen on my older, non S/S tanks though.try a little thread lock.
Be careful when flipping the barrel......you might do damage to the fragile wires inside(poor solder joints)

My Personal Modifications
As a person who enjoys tinkering with model RC tanks, I found the job of correcting and personalizing the Hen Long Tiger 1 to be very satisfying. Some of the modifications that I chose to make to the model were:

paint (Tamiya German Gray with Tamiya white primer and Model Master “Rustâ€)
3 gray $15.00, 1 white $5.00, 1 rust $6.00, 1 full day of painting
added spare tracks to turret
free (had them already) 15 minutes to paint, 2 minutes to glue
inverted mantle to correct position
free, 30 minutes to do correctly
made vision slits
free, 5 minutes
rotated pistol port 45° counterclockwise
free, 10 minutes
opened and hinged loader's hatch
free, 1 hour
corrected commander's copula
free, 30 seconds
replaced plastic hatch handles with wire
free (had wire), 15 minutes
removed cannon on/off switch and plate
free, 30 minutes
relocated and trimmed antennae
free, 20 minutes
added metal cables
$20.00, 30 minutes
added metal lights
$15.00, 30 minutes
removed false tools and repaired and sanded hull
free, 1 full day (total)
added hand-painted, metal tools
$15.00, 30 minutes
replaced plastic crate with wood
free, 10 minutes
added two Ultimate Soldier Figures and one Dragon figure
$20.00, 5 minutes
added Ultimate Soldier and Dragon equipment (helmet, binocular case, grenades etc.)
$N/A, 5 minutes
added German recognition flag
free (had it already), 2 minutes
removed bulbs in mantle (after these pictures were taken)
free, 15 minutes
replaced plastic machine gun with metal Tamiya LED flashing unit
free (had it already), 5 minutes

Total Price: $96.00 in addition to cost of tank
Total Time: 2 days, 4 hours, 47 minutes
Having the tank just the way I want it......priceless.

Hi

I found this great site! I'm looking to build a Tiger 1 1/16th scale model would the Heng Long be the best brand? This would be my first tank. Where did you purchase yours? Read your great modifications.

Thanks

Well, the Heng Long is a great tank for the money (great bang for buck) but I would not say building is part of the ownership or aquisition of a HL. It's more like deconstruction and re-building if that's your thing. Then, in that sense, they can be built.

If you want to build (or to be precise, assemble) a Tiger tank, then you will want to consider the pricey Tamiya Tiger I which by its very nature is a kit.

Heng Long tanks are great first tanks (even last tanks).

As for where I bought mine, I went for the most inexpensive source including shipping and didn't want to bother trying to find one locally in a retail hobby shop.

Got mine from ZHobby.com and had a 100% (customer assistance + speed of delivery, etc.) experience with the transaction.

Just through casual lurking one can come up with multiple hits like this:
http://www.shopzilla.com/7S--Robotic...ord--rc%20tank

A few others have ordered from Raidentech with similar results.

Harq,

Thanks for the feedback! How does the Heng Long run with the tracks it comes standard with vs. up grading to metal?

No problem!

As for comparisons between the standard and the metal tracks, I cannot really say because I have not made that upgrade yet.
I can tell you that you will lose some traction with metal tracks because they are more slippery than plastic especially on rocky surfaces, if that makes sense. They will weigh your tank down more and make its speed slower. Those are just logical answers but to be frank I'm in no hurry to upgrade since the standard tracks are quite fine really. Very durable too.
Of course it's helpful to point out that the tank I speak of is the Pershing and it has better 2-pin tracks, just like the original. Really have to say I haven't had any problem with them but your mileage may vary.

Harq,

Thanks for all of your feedback. I have decided to purchase a 1/16th Heng Long S&S Pershing instead of the Tiger 1. I went on the sites you suggested and noticed that the Pershing is also known as a "Snow Tiger"? Also some of the sites don't provide the manufacturer, but it looks like the HL. Can you assist.

Hello Everybody,
I have had a Heng Long Tiger since last Xmas and have now aquired a new receiver board, smoke unit, speaker and lights for it. But i have come across a small problem with the wiring!!! Does anyone have a wiring diagram or know where the various motor wires and bettery wires go on the new TK-RX13 receiver board?

Any help would be appreciated as my tank is sitting in bits in my model workshop at the moment!!!

My pleasure.

Yes you are correct about the Heng Long M26 Pershing being known otherwise as the "Snow Leopard". That is what the actual box says on it and is not just what a hobby distributor decided to call it. I believe that name was derived so that there wouldn't be any confusion with the Tamiya Pershing. Be certain that the tank you are looking to buy is 1/16 scale as there is a 1/30 scale one also made by Heng Long that is very similar looking. It is powered by a 4.8V battery pack and has a push-button controller.

A lot if not all the sites do not name the manufacturer as Heng Long. I'm not sure why this is. [sm=72_72.gif]

The HL Pershing tank should always come with the following items (included in the pic): a two-stick transmitter named "Sender", an often yellow 7.2V battery pack, a wall charger, a tank commander, a bottle of smoke oil and a package of cheap 6mm BB's.

Why did you settle on the Pershing instead of the evil Tiger I?

Harq-

Thank you again for the info. I decided to purchase the Pershing instead of the Tiger based on reliability. From the comments on the forum it sounded if the Tiger had "track" issues. I plan to order the Pershing from ZHobby. Perhaps the Tiger will be my next purchase

Did you paint your Pershing using an airbrush. I'm starting from scratch and need to obtain paints, brushes, etc. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi 1Scott,

I did not use an airbrush on my Pershing because that sort of precision is not needed in my estimation (tanks appear pretty rough on the exterior). I was guided to the idea of using the oft-mentioned Krylon olive drab for the paint finish. It is economical, accurate enough (at least for me) for WWII "lusterless olive drab" and one 12 oz. can can cover the whole tank. I will most likely add progressively lighter washes of Testors OD to represent faded paint so the final effect may be different from what comes from the can. There's so many variables with paint anyway.
ModelMaster FS34087 Olive Drab is good I hear...

I took the tracks off, masked off the roadwheels and painted the lower hull from all different directions. I have remarkably good coverage for a measly spray can. I painted the steel rims/hubs of the roadwheels but didn't feel like repainting the black rubber "tires" so I made a simple circle template cut from index card to mask off the adjacent areas from overspray.

I'm not going to use decals for the bumper numbers/reg. numbers but am thinking of just spraying white paint, again aerosol, through a template cut in masking tape or plain paper. May use dry transfers for the lettering. Some experimentation is in order.

In lieu of using modeling putty for plastic models, I picked up some Bondo glazing & spot putty and am amazed how well it works. It dries fairly quickly and almost has the durability of dried cement. Easily sanded and yet can be carved to a certain degree. I'm going to mix some with acetone, apply it to turret and hull and stipple it with a brush to replicate the cast steel surface on the real thing.

I'm having fun correcting all the minor scale errors on the Pershing at this time but I expect to post pictures soon.

Apologies for being so verbose.

Hello,
First of all, happy new year 2007!
I have a Heng Long Tiger I and I would like to ask some questions to make it more real.
How can I change the shield of the gun to its real position?
It would be great to have a drawing of it. Thankyou so much.
Javier
