RE: USMC Sherman
E,
If I was shooting live rounds I put 1 or 2 into your "target clock".
Unfortunately those monsterous wading trunks you added act as a nice shield on the battlefield. No worries though, your little Sherman needs an extra boost with the number of Axis tanks that usually hunt you like the vermin you are. At this point my only challenge is deciding which of my German tanks to light you up with at the night battle, you'll be all pretty and blinking like a X-Mas tree (LOL).
Dragon's teeth look great, pal!!!

Yes, I was honered to have comanded this fine machine into battle that faithful Arizona day. With the large stacks, I was able to draw fire from every Axis tank. Need less to say I lasted a whole 2 minutes. Great build!

I too had a chance to battle command this sweet Sherman, at the RCX show. I was pounded like a cheep ______ ! [:@] No fault of the tank, but I was against a KT with a force field, a Tiger and a half track. How fair is that????? [)] I think I would have faired a bit better if the radio was set up like mine. It was still a great time, my first battle! Thanks E and Squid for letting me run your tanks, your tanks are great and you are even better!

Every tank needs maintenance, and the beauty of the Tamiya tanks is they are robust enough to allow overhauls when new parts are available or so much abuse occurs the vehicle is finally out of commission. My USMC Sherman is in need of such and over-haul and I am happy to continue this build thread for the FIFTH YEAR!
"Snake Eyes" is an M4A2 equipped with fording stacks, a bow mounted flame thrower, grenade screens, water tank for troops, and custom stowage. Recently I added Tamiya KV-1 electronics to give it recoil and a diesel engine sound. Now it will get all the appropriate toys, bells and whistles and VVSS suspension.
I started by doing a walk around to assess the damage. Elevation is jammed, traverse sticks in the 11 o'clock position, foldable stacks were damaged by rookies and kids, and cosmetically, it is still innacurate.

Disassemble! First to go this time is the turret, I will be replacing the 21st century toys mantlet and rotor shield with my own version, and adding a new custom 75mm barrel. I had to back out the original installation and with a little elbow grease, it came out OK.

RE: USMC Sherman
Tried a few different things with the suspension this time. I acquired the Mato lower hull through the "black market" this time around. I can't tell you how and I would have to kill you and all..... Bottom line, it was a stealand as such I had no qualms cutting it apart and attaching it ti the lower hull differently. I skinned the Tamiya tub with sheet styrene again to fill the HVSS holes and make a clean working surface. I took apart each bogie and as an experiment replaces the road wheels with 21st century spoked ones. They are a little undersized but I will tell you how they work out in the end.
I also used the F.O.V. Spoked Idler wheels modified by adding bearings and collards.
For the MATO sprockets, Instead of drilling them out completely as before, I keyed them to accept the Tamiya gearboxes and they fit perfectly.

RE: USMC Sherman
THose are the same wheels I use. I modifed them by sanding off the tire portion and then made a master of a couple and cast them out of metal. I then found some slot car tires that fit to give me rubber tires on metal wheels.
You know that Mato sells just the suspension and track as parts now?. The boogies are about $30 and the track is about $40. I usually just buy the complete tank, because you end up so many useful parts off of it. Split hatch, cast hull, operating hatches
You really should try modifying the suspension to be fully functional. When they are sprung they glide so much better. However I will say it does add some complexity to a battling tank. THe stock Mato suspension in rock solid. You start throwing in moving parts, etc and of course stuff can happen to it.
Anyway great build.

Ilike the Mato track and bogie offerings.... I wish they put the idlers and Sprockets out there as well. Leaves a little bit of work to do.
Speaking of work, Idecided to go with a H/L traverse. Although I am currently out of metal rings, Itook my worst prototype plastic one and began grinding. This conversion is so simple once you get the concept down. Ihad to crack open my previously glued together turret and in the end decided to go woth a Mato lower turret portion to bring everything together. Ifound a BECconnector in a local hobby shop to adapt to the Tamiya MFU.

Just ask and they may sell them

My turret improvements in place. Traverse motor installed and ready to go with BEC plug connected and the custom plastic turret ring in place. I use the Heng- Long because you get no binding or stoppages when firing on all cylinders.
Once everything is completed and buttoned up I added matching paint and put some of the other detail parts on the beast.

Nothing is like the anvil of combat and it is always fun to run your projects in battle. Snake Eyes handled the course well and the KV electronics seemed to work very well. Recoil, inertia, and the Diesel sounds help me get closer to that realism I strive for. My only issue is the speed reduction from that MFU DMD combination. It is noticable from the Pershing setup I usually use. I probably need 3-1 reduction to make the last two hits more reasonably powered.

So.... Fast forward nearly 10 years and the Marine needs spiffing up.... I decided to add a new metal turret and clean up the battle damage to the stacks. I mated the Mato IR turret to my pre existing HL traverse. As these 6th Battalion tanks were really M4A3s I am making the correct mods as part of the repairs to my back deck. Tamiya gearbox needed rebuild after 15 years. Always the same gear for me!!!

Here it is back in Feb. 2013...
It's a cool tank. Nice to see that you are revamping it. I hope to share a battle field with it again.
