Sherman Build.. From the Start!
Ok.. this is really from the start... Its in the mail as I type this....
So I am first buying upgrade parts...
Lets talk bearings..... Which ones? They range in price on ebay from 12 to 30 dollars... there are the RK3, the RB3, ZZ3, and the ZZ5.....
SOme are from hooby stores.. but the above are from Bearing dealers.... I found them by entering on the EBAY search... "Tamiya Sherman Bearings"
Any input before I order... I guess the big question is Rubber or Metal... it says rubber are a little slower but are better for dirt applications.....
How deep can teh Sherman go in water..... I HAVE NEVER SEEN A TAMIYA!
Thanks
KT

Kabul Tanker
keep asking those good questions, I need to know this also as mine was shipped on the 28th from HK 7 to 14 days.
I think there are a few others also waiting, we should maybe start a group build and learn what we all need for upgrades or setbacks on the assembly, could be interesting

I have another one....
There are LOTS of upgrade parts... can anyone comment on which ones would be necessary... thinking of both operation and looks...

Save those electronics for the tank shows, you want to use and abuse it, go HL electronics! Just $14 to replace a bad board, not $300 or whatever!
Kabul, are the bearing waterproof? Get the waterproof ones!

I'd give those guys a call at Boca Bearings. I know heavy equipment bearings not RC stuff. Now the heavy equipment bearings with plastic sides are oil and water proof in that industry. They're increasingly sealed too, meaning they require no periodic lubrication.

Boca's good...
So are RC Boyz & TeamBlueStar. I've used the ZZ (metal-shields) from all three, and they are great, and haven't has any eat my styrene yet. I prefer metal-shielded as they can be cleaned easier with the 'Bearing Blaster' that RPM makes, where the others tend to end up with fragged seals if you use it on them.

RE: Sherman Build.. From the Start!
Sorry Kabul Tanker
They are metal walled, They said stock was low, now they don't show any. They didn't cost much so if someone comes up with a better type I may buy them, I'm going to pick up some parts from BYA, they have four things (they have more but not in stock). Metal Barrel 12.50, Drive Shaft Supports 12.50, Metal Sidebar Set 31.00, and metal Reservoir Set 23.00

Kabul:
Looking at Stella's Leo 2A6 and M26 Pershing sets, they appear to be metal-shielded units. And as the Sherman ones are mostly enclosed, I'd say you're fairly safe with them. As I said, I prefer them as they can be cleaned & relubed easily, where the others are next to impossible without ruining the seals.
It all depends on your preference, I guess. Metals are cheaper, teflons are most expensive.

RE: Sherman Build.. From the Start!
I am looking at getting a Tamiya Sherman as well, but this rumor of the HL Sherman has me intrigued. I don't mind spending hours detailing, but for some reason spending the same amount of time building doesn't appeal to me. I thought I would give a Tamiya a try to see how it went. Right now I am trying to decide between the Panther and the Sherman.

RE: Sherman Build.. From the Start!
I went with the RB3 type, rubber shielded and sealed, no maintenance other than cleaning the wheel area. I am sure the others would work as well, these are listed as good for dirt application and well sealed but this produces more friction. They work fine on my Sherman and are fairly cheap. Things to note while constructing the Sherman is to use generous amounts of zap ( medium ) while assembling the suspension cylinders, they should be painted before assembly. Use the Tam grease on the parts that move or slide inside each other to make the action smoother.

RE: Sherman Build.. From the Start!
THanks for the advice so far.....
So I plan on doing this build once my tiger is done (Gruppe Fehrmann F01). So I am in teh process of buying accessories... I know I am going to do a WWII Sherman... and go as far as texturing the hull...
So next question
I have ordered....
The Tank and the bearing set...
I have seen ALOT of nice stuff on Tankzone and Backyard Armour.... is there any other provider of this sort of stuff for the sherman?
Thanks
KY

RE: Sherman Build.. From the Start!
Also I have heard the stock motors should be changed with something NOT as fast but with more torque.

If you want to see all the crazy assed detail you can put on a Sherman check out Wight's build:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_55...tm.htm#5572045
This is my build, its pretty much a straight Tamiya with bearings and a Firefly twist, after running it for a few months the motors are fine, the turret rotates fine, the elevation arm does need the metal one.

Nothing much worse then coming home late from work and you find a note from the post office that says SORRY WE MISSED YOU, you but the Sherman Tank you ordered from HK is here, but because you decided to go to work, we took it back to the post office and now you can pick it up tomorrow[sm=punching.gif]
So I will have to take a long long lunch tomorrow and pick it up.
I also ordered a couple of things that Daryl has for the Sherman, ([email protected]) this is a good guy, Parts are well priced and shipping only 6.00 US. and the guy calls you and talks tank. I wish he had more.[sm=thumbup.gif]
Ordered on the 28th, August, delivered on the 5th of September, with Labor Day weekend in the middle.

He does not have a web site, just E-mail him, he will get right back to you, just ask him want he has for the Sherman, both parts 25.00 USD and 6.00 shipping.
