wacky's WSN T-34/85 project
Well, I've wanted to grab one of these for a while, and I've done it! They're out of production, so whatever's left around is RARE. I've gotten on to 2, this is my first.
It arrived today, opened it up and it was just as expected. Everything works as it should, but finding 16 working AA's in my house is a bit of a chore (8x for tank, 8x for transmitter).
Gave it a bit of a run around, on slippery surfaces, and it was OK. Since purchasing it my sole aim was to quickly convert it to Heng Long Smoke & Sound kit, so the proportional 10-speed would give the drivetrain more of a chance, since the stock WSN electronics are either all or nothing - 1 speed - which quickly damages the stock plastic gears, all that power and all that grip, something's gotta give.
Here some pics from when it first arrived today (9th Nov), no details added from the provided sprues just yet:
[link=http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee288/wackywheelz/WSN%20T34%20worklog/Dsc02713.jpg][/link] [link=http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee288/wackywheelz/WSN%20T34%20worklog/Dsc02714.jpg][/link] [link=http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee288/wackywheelz/WSN%20T34%20worklog/Dsc02716.jpg][/link] [link=http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee288/wackywheelz/WSN%20T34%20worklog/Dsc02719.jpg][/link]
OK so it sat around for a bit, then I thought stuff it, its gonna happen, why not now. So I opened it all up, checked out how the internal layout was, how much room I had to work with, how the stock recoil mechanism worked etc. From the start it was clear the stock battery box was gonna go, and a few other bits and pieces, to give me a clean slate.
Heres a few pics of the internals and making sure I have enough room:
[link=http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee288/wackywheelz/WSN%20T34%20worklog/Dsc02736.jpg][/link] [link=http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee288/wackywheelz/WSN%20T34%20worklog/Dsc02732.jpg][/link] [link=http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee288/wackywheelz/WSN%20T34%20worklog/Dsc02730.jpg][/link] [link=http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee288/wackywheelz/WSN%20T34%20worklog/Dsc02738.jpg][/link]
Then I cut out the battery box, two screw supports (not really needed) and made standoffs to hold my 2mm black styrene plate in place, which will hold all the components and be easily-removeable for cleaning/upgrades etc. Pic of test fit with all the S&S components. Shortened wiring will go underneath the styrene plate once final layout is complete, but I'm pretty happy with it as is.

Looks cool wacky! I left mine with the stock paint job too ... for now. These are an excellant platform to work with. I just sold my last one a couple months ago.

RE: wacky's WSN T-34/85 project
Thanks Panther F. I was just gonna mist a little brown over the lower areas, add a few small bits etc. I love the berlin stripes, so I dont really wanna do a full repaint, at least not yet.
I'd love to do a full captured/redone T-34(r), but only a few 85's were ever captured and used (I "could" convert my 76...) - Full side-skirts, repainted german camo and big balkankreuz painted either side. One captured T34-85 was converted to 88mm from a damaged Tiger, that would have been a sight to see!
Only think stopping me apart from that is that theres already so many german tanks out there!!

RE: wacky's WSN T-34/85 project
Yep, my guide has got a few views - I hope its helped some people out. I did it because when I went to put RX14's in my previously non-S&S tanks (TK-01 boards) there were absolutely no guides around, only vague low-res pictures and mostly for the RX13. I was planning to do an RX14 into WSN T-34, and Tiger guide as well (since its popular and would cover the Pantiger too), then release them all in a few different languages
The only thing I neglected to put in the guide was the rear lights (on the pershing), but will add a pic of where to solder those wires when I update.
Hussar, thanks for taking notice, and spreading the good word :-)

Outstanding work, Wacks---!! Yes I'm one of the viewers of your "Guide" -- Blest be he who posted the link!
When you've got a minute, Wacky, ---could you put a few labels on those last two "internal shots" ...just for us non-electronicians ?
Again, Bravo Zulus -- and a Hearty "Well Done" !

RE: wacky's WSN T-34/85 project
Excellent stuff there Wacky.
I am so tempted with one of these tanks myself, how do they compare with the static ones where the detail is concerned, from the pictures I got off google the static models look very highly detailed inside and out, is that just what people have done with upgrades etc or are they really that much different ?
Reason I ask is the temptation of RC'ing the static model in some form and the viability of it.

RE: wacky's WSN T-34/85 project
killick64 - you mean of the T-34, or the Pershing in the guide?
PapaIron - I own both (Trumpeter static & WSN RC) - the WSN is far more RC-friendly, being mostly in one piece. Overall its a great tank to work on and run, because the detail parts are either well secured or flanked by other high-profile parts which stop impacts/damage to the lower detail parts. Converting the static to RC, while do-able, would be more of a headache.
The static model, if made RC, would need a lot of glue, since its made to be viewable, hatches openable, engine lid openable, rear plate openable etc. I think they used a different plastic on the RC version (styrene vs ABS?). They are not a direct "same as static" mold, because the static kit has all the little holes for the interior and internal firewalls, where the WSN version does not. I believe overall fit is better on the RC model too. After conversion I only have to undo 2 screws under the front, and one on the rear deck near the aerial, and it comes apart - very easy, no battling with cables.

RE: wacky's WSN T-34/85 project
Looks good wacky . I did one of these a couple of years back - only difference was I put the smoke unit up to the front and ran tubing to the rear, which means you can put a capped Tee piece in just under the drivers hatch for refilling the smoke oil. another good idea is to carefullty file the turret ring gear stop down, leaving teeth all the way round,giving a full 360 deg of rotation.- just make sure you have enough cable slack for at leat 2 revolutions. I've done this mod on all my tanks.

Do you want general overview, or what each cable is?

RE: wacky's WSN T-34/85 project
Wacky Thanks for the information on the differences, I think I'll get the static model first so I can see just how far I could take it with the RC version, your info was perfect and made my choice easier, very much appreciated
