Okay! setting stuff in the half track today to see how it will fit (i need wire to motors and i cant find any...) and so I came upon this... it will all JUST fit in there! I am gonna make it so that the battery is always in there and use the motor bay for recharging and on/off switch and volume control. I also plan to use the smoker, gonna make some tubes up to run it out right where the exhaust should be. Also gonna use the "canvas" top for it to hide it all. I guess I will end up putting the rockets back on etc.

Also I noticed i totally missed a question to as how wide the gear box is. to answer it is like 2mm too wide, as that is why i had to shave down the sides and the middle pin and some of the side circles. measured width is 4.5cm. that is aprox 1&3/4 inches.

Anyhow, pictures! what do you guys think? I can shuffle around the boards, smoker and the speaker. I just have to find some wire first :P

Also, gonna leave the turret wires there, if that trailer cannon or any other trailer ideas come up and it has a cannon .. [&:]

Very Cool, I am really interested in this build, keep it coming! Hey and order a Kit from Darkith and you can record your own custom firing and hit sounds on the little killer!

Nice, The_Stuff this will be a cool new build to read, [sm=thumbup.gif] If you need wire, a dedicated Tanker will go out and rip it out of his auto and keep building.

The Stuff leave the smoker unit out of it, and the sound. The half track would not have the sounds that the tanks have when starting up and running.

well i got it all soldered up, motors out of gear box and went to test fire, and the speaker makes some light humming noise, kinda sounds like running after awhile but controls are dead... i would love to hear this is a crystal problem but i think its the main board...

Hello stuff,
Had this control your using been a working control before you installed it to it's new location. If it's making a humming sound that may not be a good sign as you allready suspect. For me the tanks were easy to tell the crystals were not working for the fact the lights on the tank would flash but it would not accept the start command from the transmitter.Don't know if you still have any of the lights still attached to the boards by the pictures you posted. no, this is an out of the box smoke and sound kit. if i had a tank open i would hook up the top to it and see if the lights blink etc. and i have no spare boards, so i guess it sits again... and i was making progress!

I am working on converting a static halftrack to remote control. I have some modelling experience but am fairly new to RC. I'd like to ask a few questions:

The Stuff- Thanks for posting your pictures and sharing your ideas, it's a big help. What exactly is an "S&S upgrade kit"?

Firenick- Awesome halftrack, especially with the cover. Did you just install a twin motor gearbox and connect it to the stock wheels?

What is a simple way to make it remote controlled? What is it that you connect to the motors that is controlled by the remote?
Thanks for the help.

Well a quick answer to what the S&S upgrade kit consists of===The Transmitter and crystals, the (2 boards) receiver board (the small one) and the (big board it controls),speaker, and a smoker unit. This is kind of the basic's used to up grade a non smoke and sound tank to a smoke and sound tank.------------BIGMIG

Panzerwaffe, I used the Tamiya dual motor gearbox and just connected the shaft to the stock sprockets. I have a dual motor speed control installed but I am using it in parallel and not mixed. Steering is done by the steering servo alone and it does steer pretty good. I've thought of going back and installing a y harness and mixing the speed control and using the steering servo to assist but I haven't had too bad a problem with the steering and it can wait.

Does anybody have an idea about how to control the front steering using a stock S&S HL board? Is there any Y cable or circuit which sycronizes the front steer with the differential speed of the tracks?

Easiest way is connect it to turret rotation feed - then use L/R on the left stick for front wheel control

I never thought of that! I wonder what voltage goes to the turret rotation...

Depends on the board, what I mean is I think there was a difference between my non-S&S (TK-01) and my RX14's. One gave 4-5v, one gave full available power (up to 7.2v).

Definitely works though, I have this mechanism in my [link=http://members.iinet.net.au/~wackywheelz/tanks/hobbyhavoc/halftrack/Dsc03164.jpg]stalled halftrack project[/link].

Is there a concern that a 7.2 volt stick pack will fry those small motors? I was thinking of ordering that very same Tamiya gearbox but I sort of dismissed it thinking that it was for simple education types of uses and would be too weak for that much voltage/current. I'd like to try to put together a small (either 1/16th or 1/15th scale) Renault FT-17 tank! A small gearbox like that may due the trick. There are 1/16th scale dozers out there (even in diecast) that have full metal tracks/suspension. Anyhow... those half tracks look awesome!

I have not heard of a concern. I am using the smoke and sound boards for more control so that i don't top them out to move it.

Same here, running 7.2v through motors designed for 3-4.5-6v... with the S&S boards being proportional you're not stuck on max power all the time, and even with a non-proportional type board tanks being slow (not top-speed all the time) it gives the motors a chance at life

At least the motors in the Tamiya dual-motor gearbox are replaceable, cheap and quite common.

Thanks for the feedback guys, then I think I will go that direction as well then. I'm glad the motors are replaceable as well... just in case!

It's nice to see more custom/scratch built builds threads. Keep them coming... very inspiring!
