Which gear reduction gearbox adapters are these? (Tamiya Sherman)
Hey all,
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what brand/who makes 'em, or possibly the ratio of these gearbox-reduction adapters?
They mount to original Tamiya gearboxes (#56005 Sherman kit) and appear to use smaller motors...
Thanks in advance!

Nevermind, figured it out. It appears to be the Tamiya High-Efficiency gearbox (Scientific series kit), havent really looked into it, unsure how much adapting has been done, but it works well, if not too well - its impractically slow, but nothing can stop it!!

Somehow, wackywheelz working on a Tamiya doesn't sound right.

RE: Which gear reduction gearbox adapters are these? (Tamiya Sherman)
LOL, sssh you!
With the reduction gears in place, I have a little less room and a slow-as-heck tank, so I reckon I'll take them off. Unsure if the tank has any upgrades fitted (bearings etc), as I bought it already built. Came with a weird custom setup for the electronics: a Tamiya Planetary gearbox for rotation, and an unusual setup for gun elevation. Electronics wise it had 2 x 6v RC car ESCs wired in seperately (I wondered why it came with two little transmitters... one 27mhz, one 40mhz). One operated left motor and rotation, the other handled right motor and elevator. Very strange but it worked, thought I have now gutted it (the little ESCs still work and I will use them for other projects) and test-fitted an RX14 board to check how fast it runs and test-fit. Unsure if I'll hunt a DMD for it or what, price is a limiting factor. Oh, and it has near-new metal tracks fitted
What pinion goes on the stock motors with the stock gearboxes, I mean whats the name or part number?

Unbelievable, something is seriously wrong, but still cool.
As you discovered, the Sherman Tamiya gearboxes do not need gear reduction. Scale speed is good out of the box, plus your vast supply of working HL motors/pinion gears will probably drop right into the Tamiya Sherman gearboxes and work just fine, just mod the connectors (the HL rip off of the Tamiya designed first generation gearbox is pretty accurate). LOL.
If your now a Tamiya purist (LOL); contact Willy at Custom RC or Bob at ETO Armor (good sources) for Tamiya replacement pinion gears and motors:

I bet it'll be hard for him to say the word "Tamiya" in any conversation from now on.

Yeah, I can hear his signature whispering GET OUT to the new Tamiya entry. Only kiddin' ... no collection is complete unless there's a Sherman in it.

RE: Which gear reduction gearbox adapters are these? (Tamiya Sherman)
It's good and all, what I expected, detail is alright... sucks that driver hatches don't open etc, I mean I could do it... thing is, I'm too damn sh*t-scared to do anything big because parts are costly (well, postage lol) and the stuffin' about...
I don't think the HL bits are simply a drop in affair, in fact I'll take some pics... here are two overall pics of the gearbox layouts compared (copied? um...), and the pinion difference

2 cents and a tip:
First remove the transmission cover (2 bottom screws) and then pull your gearboxes out (3 screws each side).
Second, remove the gear reduction units/motors from your Tamiya gearboxes and test mount stock HL motors with HL stock pinion gears to the Tamiya gearbox, using your HL motor mounting screws. (I found the HL Pz3 motor's pinion gear pitch is the same as my Tamiya 1st generation gearbox). Adjust the pinion gear lash. It should all work OK. And you do not need gear reduction in the Sherman. Save those units for another project. This HL motor solution worked OK for me.

OK I'll give it a try shortly, I took a video last night showing how goddamn slow it is with the reduction in place (on 7.2v), sorry about the surging, its a mixture of receiver placement, sitting in a metal hull with no aerial at all (and transmitter aerial not extended)

RE: Which gear reduction gearbox adapters are these? (Tamiya Sherman)
Tried it, no dice !!
Pinion too small, like I thought it might be *see pic*. Even tried another 380 motor from my big 1/12 Abrams, with a slightly larger pinion - still too small.
Sure, I could dremel it to fit, but I'd rather find the proper stock pinions - any ideas on what it is? (stock Tamiya motor pinion as fitted to all Gen 1 gearboxes)
EDIT: re-added the pics of just how different the HL gearbox design is to the Tamiya Gen-1 - hardly a copy! (differences are fairly obvious)

Right, the pinion gear needs to be reversed sometimes. Here is a better solution. Email me your mailing address off line and I can send you 2 spare new tank Tamiya 380 motors with stock pinion gears for the US Air Mailing fee. These are pretty cheap in my area and your welcome to this set. John

The 2 OEM Tamiya motors with OEM pinion gears installed and 2 HL motor plugs are double boxed in a Tamiya small parts package and mails May 17th.

OK so someone is going on a reporting rampage (4-5 posts removed in like 12hrs... normal? NO) for everything I say, the most inane words ever. I suggest the person "grow a pair", this is the real world not bible study - you know who you are.
So anyways, back on track - cant wait to get this going properly. Reductions are removed giving a little more room internally.
